Chapter 7“You ready for tonight?” Emma asked, gracefully placing herself in the seat next to Roxy in their English class. It was Friday, the first time Roxy will have seen Teddy in five weeks.
Roxy looked up from the book in her hands. “Yeah, I’m all packed. I’m so glad Fran let me switch my schedule, even though I now have to work next Saturday and Sunday. She was so nice about it too. She said Teddy was one of her favorite customers.”
“Oh, yeah, she loves Ted. Did you know that Fran’s was the first place Teddy ever performed?”
Roxy shook her head no. “I didn’t know that. That’s pretty cool though.”
Emma gave a small chuckle, remembering. “Yeah, Fran was holding an open mic night and he was a nervous wreck, even though it was basically just his friends there watching him. Now he plays for thousands of people, can you believe it?”
Roxy could picture him all nervous before his first performance. Anyone would be. She knew she certainly would be. Plus, she had seen some pictures of Teddy when he was younger, and he just seemed like someone who would be extremely nervous, in that cute nerdy way of his.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
School for the day was finally over, and Roxy, along with Emma and Teddy’s family were pulling into the venue parking lot where Teddy’s concert would be held. Since they had left after school ended and it was a few hour drive, they made it there just half an hour to spare before the show started.
“So, we’re allowed to go in the back way, you guys coming?” Mrs. Geiger explained.
“No way, Aunt Lori, Roxy needs the whole fan experience at her first Teddy concert.” Emma grinned, linking arms with Roxy and walking towards the main entrance.
“Ok, you have your tickets and passes, right?” Mr. Geiger called out.
“Got ‘em!” Emma yelled back.
“Alright, go backstage after the concert.” Mrs. Geiger yelled and Emma just waved her arm, still walking, letting them know they had heard her.
As Roxy and Emma entered, there was an overwhelming amount of girls wearing Teddy’s face on their t-shirts. They even saw three different girls with the phrase, ‘I want to have Teddy’s babies!’ on their shirts. Uh, can you say, creepy? And more than they could count on two hands had shirts with the words ‘Marry Me Teddy!’ Oh, yeah, real original.
The two found their seats, being more grossed out than ever and realized Teddy had gotten them front row center.
“Nice seats Teddy!” Roxy shrieked as they parked themselves in the chairs. The girl on the other side of Roxy looked at her funny, then rolled her eyes and started talking to her friends again.
Emma laughed at her friend, but then just continued talking until the lights died, signaling the start of the concert.
The opening act was pretty good. Two sisters named Kate and Claire, calling themselves Divine; however, Emma called them Aly and AJ wannabes, which got a giggle out of Roxy. Whatever Emma may think of them, Roxy actually liked some of their stuff.
Not too much longer, it was Teddy’s turn, and the crowd erupted in screams. Teddy entered with his guitar, the same guitar Roxy had used at his party, and spoke into the microphone. He did the normal introduction: said hello, asked how everyone was doing, and then introduced the song. When he pulled back from the mic and started to play, he locked eyes with Roxy, smiled, and winked.
Evidently the girl next to Roxy, thought the wink was for her because she started squealing and saying, “he winked at me! Did you see that? He winked at me!” Roxy burst out a muffled laugh, letting the girl have her moment.
The concert lasted another hour, Teddy glancing Roxy’s way eight more times. Not that she was counting. However, the girl next to her thought at least half of them were for her. Teddy said his goodbyes and left the stage, but his fans had other plans because they started chanting “encore” repeatedly. Giving in, Teddy and his band appeared again on stage, playing two more songs.
When they were finished for real, Emma looked over with a sly smile. “Wanna mess with Ted?”
Roxy grinned. “Sure, it’s my favorite pass time. What’d you have in mind?” Emma didn’t say anything as she grabbed Roxy’s hand, still smiling, and dragged her out into the entrance area. Finally, she stopped in front of one of the merchandise tables, staring at the t-shirts. Roxy knew exactly what she was thinking, and smiled just as evilly.
Roxy bought a t-shirt with Teddy’s face on it and a blue bracelet and slipped them on and headed for the backstage area. To get backstage, there was a large hallway with the door at the end. Everyone was standing to the right side, against the wall, in a clustered line, hoping to catch a glimpse of Teddy.
Not knowing any better, Roxy walked over to the line, and stood in the back, behind a woman and her pre-teen daughter.
“What are you doing?” Emma asked when she saw Roxy. “We don’t have to stand in line.” She took Roxy’s hand.
“Oh.” Well, how was she supposed to know? She’d never been backstage before!
Emma led Roxy down the corridor to the door, which was guarded by security. “Do you have your ID and pass? We need them to get in.” Emma told Roxy, who began getting it out of her purse. Just before they reached the door, the girl that had been sitting next to Roxy during the concert, stepped out of the line, blocking their way.
“Where do you think you’re going? You can’t take cuts in line, I’m next!” She spat out in a nasty tone with her hands on her hips.
Emma rolled her eyes, and spoke to the security guard right behind the girl. “Emma Geiger.” She said stressing her last name, “and Roxy Parker,” then held up both of their licenses and passes, so the guard could see.
After checking his list, he opened the door. “You’re clear, go on in.”
Emma gave the girl a satisfied look of victory and said, “If you’re going to be a b**** and speak to someone like that again, make sure the girl isn’t Teddy’s cousin first.” She put emphases on the word cousin, like she had on Geiger, and the girl huffed as they passed, brushing her shoulder in the process.
As the door closed behind them, Roxy was completely shocked and wondered if Emma really had done that.
“What?” Emma asked. “She was rude.” They both giggled and continued to stroll along, searching for Teddy’s dressing room. There wasn’t much action going on, people just passing by, some more frantic than others. The area was softly lit and held framed pictures of signed band posters all along the walls.
“Oh my gosh!” Roxy ran to a picture. “The Beach Boys played here!”
Emma joined her friend in front of a framed poster of the Beach Boys. “Ooook.”
“My dad’s a big fan, and he kind of got me hooked on them.” Roxy elucidated.
“Oh. That’s cool.”
“The Beach Boys, great group.” A man’s voice stated, behind the girls.
They both turned around. “Oh hey Billy.” Emma gave him a hug.
“Hey girls.” Billy grinned, and looked at Roxy’s shirt. “Whoa, Teddy’s gonna get a kick out of that.” He chuckled.
Roxy gave a small laugh as well. “That’s what we’re going for. Do you know where he is?”
“Oh, yeah, he’s right in that door.” He pointed to a door with a yellow star on it. “I’ve got to be going, have fun girls.” Then he walked out the door they had just entered from.
Emma turned to Roxy. “You ready?”
“Definitely.” And with that, they stepped into the room.
“Hey Geiger!” Roxy shouted, when she saw him on the couch, talking to Claire from Divine, the opening act. Teddy’s family and Evan were in there as well.
Teddy glanced up, recognizing the voice, and grinned from ear to ear. “Bubbles!” He jumped up, ready to give her a hug, but stopped short when he saw her shirt. “Whoa, what is that?”
Emma coughed through her laugh, but Roxy wanted to play it up. “What? You don’t like it?” She said, innocently, looking down at the t-shirt. “I also bought one of the bracelets too!” She sang, holding up her wrist, trying to freak him out.
Teddy gave a weird look, “Uh, um.” He stammered to answer, obviously dumbfounded.
Not being able to hold it in any longer, Emma and Roxy burst into a fit of laughter. “You should have seen your face!” Emma cracked up.
Everyone in the room started laughing as well, including Teddy. “OK, seriously now, take it off.” He said.
Roxy laughed again. “Oh c’mon, Geiger, lighten up.” Roxy took off the t-shirt, revealing her other shirt underneath. Roxy then held up the Teddy shirt, “you know, I might just have to hang this on my bedroom wall.” She laughed, seeing Teddy’s wide eyes. “I’m just kidding! Come here.” And she pulled him into a hug. After they broke apart, Teddy introduced her and Emma to Claire.
“It’s nice to meet you. I really loved your music.” Roxy commented, shaking Claire’s hand.
“Yeah, you too, and thanks.” Claire leaned back in the couch after also shaking Emma’s hand.
Roxy found a seat in the corner, next to Teddy’s sister, Rachel, who looked utterly bored. Feeling bad for the girl, Roxy began chatting her up, and she looked more than thankful that someone actually noticed she was in the room. Rachel was telling Roxy about a boy named Adam from her class that she had a bit of a crush on. From what Roxy could follow, Rachel heard from her friend Tiffany, who heard from Mandy, who heard from Simon, who heard from Adam that he liked Rachel, but he apparently also liked this Megan Miller girl, so Rachel didn’t know what to do.
Dang.
Boy drama was starting at younger ages these days. She never remembered dealing with that stuff at nine-years-old, but then again, she was never in one place for long. Roxy couldn’t even say she had ever had a real boyfriend.
“Rox, which one?” Even asked, not realizing Roxy wasn’t paying attention.
Roxy glanced up, and saw all eyes on her. “Oh, sorry, what were you talking about?”
“Which one, forks or sthingys?” Evan asked again.
Roxy thought for a moment. “Well, I’m partial to sporks, myself.” She said in an English accent, sounding all proper, which got a laugh out of the group, and then continued her conversation with Rachel. After giving her some boy advice, which Rachel seemed to ponder over, Roxy caught up on what the rest of the group was talking about.
As Evan talked about how cotton candy should be its own food group, Roxy watched Teddy. His eyes seemed more blue than normal, and his hair was the same messy perfection, just a tad longer, but other than that, he was the same guy. The same guy she felt truly comfortable around and the same guy who made her smile even when she was just thinking about him. While Teddy was gone, Roxy had finally figured out that he had become her best friend. But that was crazy, right? She’d only known the guy for two months. However, they did spend an entire night talking on the phone the day before he left on tour, just spilling their thoughts to one another. She remembered that time fondly, feeling as if she had known him for years.
Then there was that dream. Roxy thought about it often.
Quietly, Roxy’s fond feelings were put on hold when she saw Claire place her hand on Teddy’s knee. Confused by the twinge of jealousy that flooded her body, she didn’t realize she was staring at Teddy to see what his reaction to it would be. Teddy looked down at her hand, and then instinctively eyed Roxy to see if she had spotted, becoming perfectly aware that she had when they locked eyes. For a split second, he thought he had seen a tint of sadness wash over them, but pushed it aside, and looked away, unable to keep her gaze. That’s when Roxy knew he wasn’t going to do anything and it all fell into place.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Reaching the hotel that they were all going to be guests at for the night, Teddy wanted to talk to Roxy, noting in his mind that she hadn’t said much since she caught Claire’s hand on his knee.
Roxy was walking a step or two behind the rest of them, headed to the elevators, when Teddy grabbed her by the arm, and pulled her to the side, next to a chair and coffee table.
Sighing, Roxy looked at Teddy, her eyes about to close. “What, Geiger? It’s after two am, and I’m tired. Can’t this wait until the morning?” She spoke a bit snappier than she had intended, but really didn’t care.
“I need to talk to you about earlier.” He knew that she would know what he was talking about.
“Look, I get it. You like her; you’re probably already dating her, am I right?” Teddy didn’t say anything, giving Roxy the answer. “It’s not my business. I could care less who you dated.” She lied. Why was she getting so upset anyways?
Teddy looked hurt. “Well, I’m glad to know you care.” And began to turn away.
“Teddy.” Roxy put her arm out, stopping him. “I’m sorry.” She sighed. “I’m glad that you found someone who makes you happy. I guess I’m just surprised you didn’t tell me.”
“I was going to tell you tonight, because I didn’t really want to tell you over the phone.” He sounded genuine, so Roxy sucked it up and smiled.
“Ok.” And then he pulled her into a hug, one that she would cry about in the future.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Hey.” Emma smiled, as Roxy entered their hotel room. Everyone had gone up when she and Teddy were talking.
“Hey.” Roxy said, in a pitiful voice.
“What’s wrong?” Emma had noticed.
“Nothing.” She lied. “I’m just tired.” Emma had a feeling of what was bothering her; she had seen Claire slip her hand on top of her cousin’s knee as well.
Not saying another word, the two friends changed clothes and climbed into their twin beds, snuggling under the covers.
“Good night, Roxy.”
“Night, Em.”
