"What was I thinkin'?" -- Dierks Bentley 'What Was I Thinkin'?'1
I looked at the clock as my cell phone began buzzing on the bed beside me. Why did I have to be the one person in the world with a phone that sounds like a screaming six-year-old girl when it rings? Why did I even have a land line anyway? I've got thirty minutes of sleep left, for crying out loud!
"Hello?" I grumbled into the phone without even bothering to see who it was.
"Um, is Tucker there?"
"Um.. No." If I had been thinking clearly I would have told this person off for calling so darn early as I told them they had the wrong number.
"Well... Um..."
"What I mean is... This is the wrong number..."
"Are you sure? I could have sworn... "
"Sorry Mystery Dude," I chuckled into the phone. Why was I actually carrying on a conversation with this guy.
"Well... Do you happen to know a Tucker by any chance?" He laughed.
"No, sorry. Don't think so."
"Oh.. Well. So what's your name?"
"Not Tucker."
"Obviously," he let out a laugh and somehow she could tell it had been the first laugh he'd had in a while.
"What about you?"
"I'm not saying," he laughed.
"Well, Not Saying, I need to get back to sleep so I can enjoy the last fifteen minutes before my alarm goes off."
"Oh, right. Sorry." He laughed again.
"Its ok," Why was I saying it was ok? Why was I so comfortable just having a conversation with someone that I didn't know? Maybe it was his voice... It had that calm, relaxed tone to it.
"Goodnight Not Tucker." He laughed.
"Goodnight, Not Saying," she said as she clicked the phone off, and surprisingly, she found herself smiling like an idiot as she did so.
- - - -
"So what you're saying is, that you got this phone call from a guy who could be a complete psycho... But you're ok with it? What if "Tucker" was just a cover-up?" My cousin and best friend, Emma asked as we ate lunch together.
"Em, look. It was probably just a one time thing and it was ridiculously early and I was probably just delirious, ok?" Emma rolled her big brown eyes as she stood and threw her trash away and dusted off her scrubs. "And if we sit here and talk about this more, Lynnette is going to kill us."
Emma and I are both nurses in the emergency room of the local hospital here in Middle Of Nowhere, Texas, as I like to call it. Nothing ever really happens unless a football player gets hurt at practice or during a game, but our boss is still a nazi about punctuality.
"Ya'll are late!" Lynnette barked. Thank god she was really a cool person as long as we weren't late all the time. It had been the three of us and Jake working these four twelve hour shifts for at least two years now, so we were all pretty much like family. "Madison, that football boyfriend of yours came in with a concussion again."
"He's not my boyfriend. Besides, I've dated football players. Nothing but trouble." I rolled my eyes.
"Stranger things have happened," Lynnette mumbled as she flipped through a chart and then handed it to me. "I'll let you take it."
I rolled my eyes as I stomped off to curtain four to take care of my patient. "Ok Mr. Taylor. You know the routine."
He smirked at me with that smile that had probably charmed many a girl, but today, it just wasn't working for me.
"Listen... You've played this game, since you were probably, what? Six? Why do you keep hitting people so hard you cause yourself to black out? You're in college now. Don't you want to live long enough to graduate and get a decent job?"
"Madison, all I have is football. Guys like me don't get places without sports."
"Yeah, I've heard that excuse before," I rolled my eyes again and tucked the short layers of my sandy colored hair behind my ear. "Alright, I gotta get the doctor... Standard precudure, ya know? Be back in a little bit."
I slid the chart down the desk to Emma before flopping myself down into a chair. "I'm so tired!"
"Only six more hours to go too!" Lynnette laughed mischeviously from across the admit area.
"Maybe you shouldn't be answering the phone and talking to strangers," Emma mumbled as she erased a few patients from the board in front of her and replaced their names with new ones. "Jake's got a guy out in triage that "fell" on a bottle of Gatorade. Who wants it?" Emma asked as she held the new chart up in the air.
"I got the last one, its your turn Madison." Lynnette called from across the room and I rolled my eyes.
"Ugh." I groaned as I stood and took the chart from Emma's hands. "This is so disgusting."
- - - -
Finally, I was free. I don't know what I was thinking, taking on those twelve hour shifts with Emma. The seven a.m. sunset was a welcoming image as I climbed into my Jeep for the drive home to my one bedroom apartment located in the part of town that the city council was "revitalizing" as they liked to frequently call it.
I ate a quick bowl of cereal before hopping in the shower and changing into my pajamas. As my head hit the pillow, I heard Dierks Bentley sing something about what was I thinking? Hmm.. What was I thinking when I actually carried on a conversation with a complete stranger over the phone?
I wonder if he'll call again...

"I started thinking out loud: I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired..." -- The White Tie Affair 'Candle (Sick and Tired)'2
He didn't call the next day, which was what I expected. It was just a wrong number, after all. What did I expect? Although, I would have loved to get the chance to figure out where I recognized that voice from.
"So did mystery guy call?" Jake asked as he, Emma, and I sat around a booth in IHOP after finishing our last shift of the week.
I gave Emma a look, "You told him?"
"Yeah. Why not?" She said as she stuffed a fork full of pancakes into her mouth.
"Yeah. What's the big deal with that?" He asked, faking offense.
"Nothing. I just didn't see it as a big deal." I shrugged. "But no. He didn't call. It was just a wrong number."
"What if he was a complete psycho?" Jake was beginning to sound like Emma.
"I'm sure he's not," I rolled my eyes as I finished off my eggs. "He would have called last night if he was."
"Maybe he's a smart psycho," Jake said. "Duh."
I rolled my eyes as I let out a yawn. I had been up for over twelve hours and I needed my sleep.
"So anyway. What's everyone going to do with their time off?" I asked curiously, then looked at Jake. "Spare us the naughty details, please."
"I have a date," Emma told us. "His name is Ryan and he's really cute!"
"How did you meet him?"
"At the gas station."
"The gas station? Seriously?" I tried not to laugh. "He wasn't working there was he?"
She rolled her eyes and threw her napkin at me. "No, we were both pumping gas and we got to talking while we were filling up."
"Thats what she said," Jake said quickly and we both rolled our eyes at him at exactly the same moment.
"JAKE!" We both cried and laughed at him.
"What?" He let out a laugh.
"What are you doing this weekend?" I asked him curiously.
"Sleeping. And more sleeping. And oh maybe if I have time I might do some more sleeping," he said.
"No raunchy hot dates this weekend?" Emma asked.
"Come on, Madison's not the only one here with the lame love life right now."
"My love life is not lame," I said.
"Oh yeah thats right, you still visit your ex every weekend for no reason," he stated. "We know exactly how your weekend is going to go Mads. First, you'll go home and sleep. Then you'll get up, grab a book and go pick up a burrito. Drive out to the cliff and watch the sunset. Then tomorrow you'll go to the grocery store, and visit Justin."
"Whatever, guys. I need sleep." I laid enough money on the table for my food. "I'll talk to you guys later."
I loved my friends, but sometimes they could really get on my nerves. So what if I hadn't had a good date in... Was it six months or a year? Who cares? I like to think that it means I'm independent. So what if I still visit Justin every now and then. We've been good friends since before we were together. We went to high school together for crying out loud!
- - - -
When I got home, I quickly shed my clothes before diving under the covers to get some much needed sleep after the unsually busy shift before. I turned my radio down low before closing my eyes in hopes of falling asleep quickly.
I could have sworn I had just fallen asleep when I heard the shrill noise of my phone. But the sunset outside told me I had slept well past my usual time. I grabbed the phone and held it up to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Are you sure you're not Tucker?"
"Not Saying," I almost laughed.
"That would be me."
"You called again." I told him, realizing that it was the exact same time he had called two nights ago.
"I did. I hope you don't think I'm some sort of stalker. Something just draws me in, ya know?"
"Yeah." Because, I was feeling the same way.
"Maybe its just the thought of talking to a complete stranger and being able to tell them anything because, hey, they don't know you, so there's no reason to get embarrassed, right?"
"Maybe," I smiled at his small rant. "Or maybe its because I sound like one of those girls from those late night chat lines."
He let out a genuine laugh before replying, "Or maybe its that I just like talking to you. Whether I know you or not."
"Maybe," I said quietly as I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. "So how was your day?"
"Ehh. Ok. Busy. Annoying."
"Don't bore me with all the details, ok?" I teased sarcastically.
"Sorry, I'm on the road a lot, and its... Sometimes I just get sick and tired of it. Anyway... How was your day?"
"It started out slow, but then it got really busy," I told him, pretending not to notice how quickly he turned the question around to me.
"Your job?"
"Yes. Nurse."
"Oh, night shift," he teased. "Only kidding."
"Yeah, if only things were that interesting." I heard a small beep in my ear and pulled the phone away. "Ah, crap."
"What?"
"My mom's on the other line," I sighed.
"What's so bad about that?"
"Because I'm sure we'll spend at least an hour talking about my love life - or lack thereof." I sighed. "And then she'll just... Brag on my sister like she's made of gold or something.
"Oh and don't forget how she's been trying to force me to go to one of my neice's ridiculous beauty pageants. Ugh, its so weird."
"It can't be that bad," he said softly.
"Why do you say that?" I asked as the beeping in my ear stopped.
"Well, I mean. You have someone that's withing arms reach if you need them, but you don't even want to talk to them on the phone." He stated. "You should just... Enjoy it. Not take it for granted."
I wasn't sure what to say to that, so we both stayed silent for a while. I could hear him breathing on the other end, and I wondered what he was thinking.
"You sound sad."
"A little," he sighed.
I heard some noise in the background and a mumbled, "In a second Billy."
"Do you need to go?" I asked curiously.
"Uhh, yeah. Sort of."
"Ok. Well, have fun..." I said, not wanting to get off the phone with him.
"Talk to you later, Not Tucker."
"Later, Not Saying." I said as I hung up the phone and stared at it for a minute.
What was I getting myself into?

"Crazy, Crazy for feeling so lonely, I'm crazy, Crazy for feeling so blue..." -- Patsy Cline 'Crazy'3
"So what are you up to tonight?" He asked as I stood in my closet, searching for something to wear.
"Well, me and a friend are going out tonight. We do it every Tuesday because its like the start of my weekend," I told him as I picked out a plum colored cotton dress.
"Oh yeah?"
"Mmhmm." I said as I hung it on the back of the bathroom door then went in search of a towel. "What about you?"
"Oh... I'm just busy. Working on stuff because people keep demanding stuff out of me and I'm trying, but I just can't get very far, ya know?" He sighed. "I keep asking for a break because I've been at this for a year straight now and I just need a break."
"There's not anyone you can call? A best friend or brother?" I asked as I sat on the bed with a clean towel across my lap while we continued talking.
"I don't know if they have the time either."
"Well, maybe they can make the time and they're just waiting for the moment you ask them to come see you for a while." I suggested.
"Maybe," he sounded skeptical. "So, what kind of outing is this? Is it like, you and one of your girl friends or is this a date?"
"A date?" I almost laughed out loud, "No, but it is with my ex. We'be been friends since before we dated, so... And we used to go there all the time... But its not a date."
"Are you sure?" He laughed. "Sounds like a date to me."
"Well, to me its not a date."
"What about to your ex?"
I wasn't sure what Justin thought. He wasn't usually one to just come out and say what he was thinking; I remember always having to force his thoughts out of him when I wanted to know what he was thinking.
"Um. I don't think so," I tried to sound convincing, but really I wasn't exactly convinced myself. What if Justin did want to get back together?
He let out a laugh. A deep laugh that made me smile, because I knew laughter was hard to come by for him lately, and he deserved a little cheerfulness. "Ok. Well, you go out tonight and tell me how it goes, ok?"
"I can't go now. Not after you've put all these thoughts and ideas in my head."
"Forget I ever said anything, k?" He was still laughing, "Should be a good time."
"Yeah."
"Later, Not Tucker."
"Later, Not Saying," I rolled my eyes as I hung up my phone and went to the bathroom to get ready for my date - I mean, night out with a friend.
Something sounded so familiar about him tonight. Was it his voice? Sure, but it always sounded like that. Was it something he said? Of course, it had to be. But what was it? Everything he said was pretty much ordinary... He asked what I was up to, how things were going. He told me to have a good time tonight. What the heck was it?
- - - -
"I'm coming!" I yelled as I scrambled to get my dress on over my underwear. I always waited until I had finished my hair and make up before putting my clothes on because it got too hot in my bathroom. "Stop knocking on the door!"
The continued to knock, not stopping once as I finally managed to pull the dress over my head and run down the hallway to the door at the same time. When I swung open the door and found Justin there, I was mad.
"You're early!" I grumbled as I stomped off to my bathroom to finish up.
"Well, you're always late and I finally got the truck fixed, so I thought I would come get you. You should be thanking me." He said as he sat down on my hand-me-down couch.
"Well you could have at least warned me!"
"You still wouldn't have been ready!" He called back to me and I had to admit, he was right. He knew me too well. "It was supposed to be a surprise."
"Yeah, well I was surprised all right," I said as I put on a pair of black earrings that looked like buttons and my flip flops. "Ok, I'm ready now."
"Are you sure?" He asked curiously and I nodded. "Positive?"
He got up and walked towards me, smirking. "What did I forget?"
He held his fingers in the air and made a twirling motion with them, telling me to turn around. Before I knew it, he was grabbing my dress and yanking it out of my underwear. Why didn't I catch that before? Because I didn't look in the mirror before I came out here, thats why...
"Oh," my face grew hot as my cheeks turned pink and he got that look on his face like he used to get when we were together. When he would make me blush over something he said. "Can we go now?" I whispered.
"Sure," he shook his head and followed me out of the apartment.
- - - -
Jake's band was performing at the bar/club when we arrived. They were pretty good too. Justin made his way to the bar to get us drinks as I made my way up to a table towards the back.
"Madison!" Emma called from the other side of the room then made her way to where I was sitting. Great, as soon as she saw Justin, I would never hear the end of her constant reminders that I am the most predictable person on the planet. Just fantastic.
"Hey Em," I said when she sat down.
"Are you here with Justin?"
"Aren't you supposed to be on a date?"
"I asked you first," she said and I rolled my eyes.
"Yes. Now you."
"Yes, and he turned out to be a total pig," she said and waved it off. "He's over there in the corner with that red head. You know, he even asked me to pay!"
I gave a little laugh as Justin sat down next to me and gave me a soda, while he sipped on a beer. I couldn't stand alcohol, and he knew it, but he drank anyway. "Hey Emma."
"Hi Justin." She gave him a friendly smile. "How's the garage?"
"Its good. Just got a ton of cars in that need work. Too bad I can't afford enough employees to get it all done on time." Justin and his brother, Danny own a garage together, Williams Garage, that they just bought.
"You'll get there," she said as she excused herself to go dance in front of the stage.
"How come you don't dance anymore?" He asked.
"What?"
"You and Em used to get up there and dance together. Heck, you used to beg me to dance with you, but you don't dance anymore."
"I didn't dance that much," I said as I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Mads," he titled his head to the side and gave me the I'm not blind look, "Come on."
"I just don't... Have a reason to I guess. No one ever wanted to do it with me anyway, besides Emma."
"Well come on," he said as he stood up and held his hand out to me.
I shook my head, "No thats ok."
"Madison, get up. Stop acting like a baby."
I shook my head again and kept my arms crossed protectively over my chest.
"Ok," he laughed as he bent down and lifted me out of the chair and carried me to the stage himself.
"I hate you, ya know," I told him, but we both knew it wasn't true, so we both started giggling as we stood there awkwardly.
"Alright!" Jake called through the mic as his song ended. "We're gonna switch gears a bit because Johnny's giving me the evil eye. I guess that means I gotta play a little country for you guys. This one is for Madison, its her favorite." He teased as he turned to the band and began talking to them before beginning the song.
Did I mention I love Patsy Cline?
And that Jake can do a pretty good rendition of 'Crazy'? Well he can.
"Crazy, Crazy for feeling so lonely, I'm crazy Crazy for feeling so blue..."
"Come on Mads," Justin said as he held his arms out. I shook my head. "Come on, you're gonna hurt my feelings."
Emma gave me a shove in his direction, and then I was slow dancing with my ex at a pretty awesome redneck bar just outside of Austin, Texas. And I kind of liked it... I forgot all the reasons we split in the first place, and I was falling for his charm all over again.
- - - -
I laughed as I listened to Emma snore softly in the seat by the window. It was morning and the sun was just coming up. We had left the bar around two a.m. to get ice cream with Emma and ran into a bunch of people we graduated with, who were all going to the outskirts of town for a bonfire.
So we joined them. It was on this big cliff that looked down on all the rest of the town, and it had the best view of the sunrise. We left just as the sun was starting to rise and Emma began to nod off.
"So who's this mystery caller Emma was telling me about?" Justin asked after dropping Emma off.
"Just this guy who had the wrong number," I said. "Why does everyone keep asking me about him?"
"Because he keeps calling back and you keep talking to him," Justin laughed. "Do you realize how crazy that sounds?"
I rolled my eyes. "He's not a stalker."
"How do you know that for sure?"
"He's just not. I know him... From somewhere."
"Oh thats great Madison! You know him from somewhere, but you don't know where, and you keep talking to him."
"Look, its no big deal ok? Its not like I'll ever meet him anyway, ok? So just calm down."
He shook his head. "Just be careful, ok? You're, like, the only friend I have and I'm trying to look out for you."
And thats when I realized it. Not Saying was right. Justin still had feelings for me.
"Ok." I said quietly as I stared out the window for awhile. "Do you think I'm crazy?"
He looked at me from the corner of his eye. "You've always been crazy, Mads."
- - - -
"Hello?" I asked as I cleared my throat and buried myself deeper under the covers.
"Well hello sunshine. I thought you didn't have to sleep all day on Wednesdays. Someone had a long night."
"Yeah," I grunted into the phone.
"So, how was your date?"
"Shut up." I said.
"What?" He asked curiously.
"You were right."
"I was right about what?" He was playing dumb now and it was annoying.
"When you said that Justin may still have feelings for me. He does. I realized it on the way home this morning." I told him.
"I told you. I'm like your own personal love doctor. And I'm free," he joked and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at his corniness. Although it was cute.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," I said as I yawned and slowly made my way out of bed to find food. "I feel like a bear in hibernation. All I ever do is sleep. And I'm so predictable. My friends, like, know me and everything I do and like, and its just weird."
"Why is that weird? Last time I checked, friends were supposed to know stuff about each other."
"Well, except for me and you. You know stuff about me, but I don't know anything about you except that you have a familiar voice and a busy lifestyle."
"I'm sorry," he apologized. I hadn't even realized I was ranting. "I just have to be careful, with what I do, with who I talk to and associate with. If you don't know who I am, its... Better."
"Yeah, but I want to know more about you. Do you have siblings? Whats your favorite color? What do you do all day? What kind of music do you like? Whats your favorite movie? Friends should know these things about each other."
He was quiet for a minute and I heard that all too familiar sound: Someone was telling him he had to get off the phone.
"You heard that?" He asked quietly.
"Yeah," my voice was barely above a whisper.
"Later?" He asked.
"Later." I said quickly before hanging up the phone. Why was I so frustrated over someone I didn't even know?
