"C’mon sweet thing, Won’t you climb on out of your window while the world is sleeping, Cause you know I need you and there’s no way I’ll be leavin 'til we’re kissing on the porch swing Oh my little sweet thing..." -- Keith Urban 'Sweet Thing'4
How is it that I can't stay away from Justin? There are so many things I could be doing right now - like cleaning my apartment - but I'm here instead. At Williams Garage, eating lunch with Justin in the bed of his truck.
"Hey sweet thing!" He had called when I walked up, swinging a bag of Subway. "What's that?"
"Lunch?" I offered. "They gave me a footlong when I asked for half that, so I thought I'd offer you the other half."
It was a total lie. And I was sure he knew it because I'm a horrible liar... And well, he knows me better than anyone.
"I'll get some drinks," he said, heading back into he garage and reappearing a few minutes later with two cans of Coke.
As we ate, we found ourselves talking about the "old days"... The days when we were together. And even the times when I was his annoying tutor, making sure he kept up with his assignments so he wouldn't flunk out, because if he did, he wouldn't be able to play football on Fridays. And not playing football of Fridays was - is - a sin in this town.
"Did I ever tell you that you smell like flowers?" He asked curiously.
"No," I laughed and shook my head as I sipped my drink.
"Well you do. And I noticed it that first tutoring session in the library." He told me. "That night when I went home I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was ridiculous. I felt like a little schoolgirl."
"Is that why you always got me flowers?" I thought about his girlfriend before me... Cassie. The girl who got so upset when he'd break his plans with her to study with me because she didn't understand why he couldn't just study with her.
He nodded and blushed a little bit, and I couldn't help but wonder what Cassie thought after she saw us together, and the single flowers he would leave under the windshield wipers of my car.
"Thats sweet," I told him. "How did you know I liked daisies?"
He shook his head. "I didn't. I just thought of you when I saw them, so..." He was still blushing, and I couldn't help but think it was adorable.
"Well you smell like a boy." I told him and we laughed after.
"Well I would hope so," he was still laughing.
"You could have any girl in this town, so why haven't you moved on?" I asked curiously.
He shrugged his shoulders and shoved a corner of his sandwich in his mouth. To avoid a vocal answer, I was sure.
"You could get any guy in town if you tried, Mads. Why haven't you?" He asked me the same question, and to be honest I hadn't really thought about it. And I didn't really have an excuse anymore.
Before it was because I was busy with my last semester of school, and then it was work, but even those were flimsy excuses.
"I don't have a good answer for that," I said honestly as I wadded my napkin into a ball.
An older man in an even older pickup truck pulled into the gravel parking lot and hopped out.
"I'll let you get back to work," I said as I hopped off the bed of his truck.
He nodded. "Here, I'll take the trash." I helped him gather the napkins that had been blown around by the wind, and just as I was turning to leave he gave me a kiss on the cheek.
I didn't know what to think about it... Was it just a friendly gesture or did it mean something more serious? Was he just messing with my head? Or were Emma and Not Saying right?
"I'll see you later," he said and gave me that look. That look that shows the way he really feels despite what his body language might say. And I knew Not Saying was right...
I need to talk to Not Saying.
- - - -
"So I was right, huh?" Not Saying laughed as we talked. "You know, I should totally get paid for this."
"Yeah, you're just that great," I teased sarcastically as I searched through my cabinets for something to eat.
"What are you doing?"
"Looking for some food. Why?"
"Because you're making a ridiculous amount of noise. And you can't hear my lovely voice when you're making so much noise."
"Oh, come on. What makes you think your voice is greater than any other?" I joked.
"You answer the phone every time I call, right?" He did have a point. And I did like his voice. It was different than most... And it was still so familiar. "So tell me about this sister of yours."
I let out a small groan. "All my life I have been compared to her. Why can't you be like Kourtni? Why can't you be girly and dance like Kourtni? Why do you play football with those boys on Saturdays instead of going shopping with me and your sister? When are you going to get married and start a family like Kourtni? I swear, the list of questions is so long that I'd still be asking them a year from now."
"You played football?"
"It was just a bunch of people getting together and messing around with a football." I told him. "It was far from anything serious."
"So you're like the tomboy type?"
"Well, I used to be all tomboy, but I've got my girly side." I explained. "I guess that started some time in Freshman year... Thanks to Emma."
"So why do your parents insist on you being like your sister?"
"Well, when we were younger, we were both in this dance class, and I totally had two left feet. I was clumsy and ungraceful. But Kourtni was perfect. So my mom worked me harder and it always led to this huge fit on my part because I hated dance. And she wanted both her girls to be lady like and graceful, but I was more rough and clumsy than anything.
"And then, in school, she was a straight A student and no matter how hard I tried I made mostly Bs."
"I'm sure your parents were just trying to get you to be the best."
"Yeah, but they didn't have to be such dictators, ya know? Why couldn't they just be happy about what I did accomplish? They're still like that today. Thats why I can't stand to go over there... And I do it as little as possible." I told him as I poured a can of ravioli into a bowl and stuck it in the microwave.
"I think you're being just a tiny bit over-dramatic." He told me. "They're your parents. They mean well. You shouldn't avoid them just because they get on your nerves. I'm sure they miss having you around."
"So what about you? Your family..."
"Well, I'm pretty much on my own... Away from everyone I know for most of the year. So when I see them, I'm glad to see them, ya know?" Suddenly I felt like a terrible person. Here I am, perfectly capable of visiting my parents whenever I wanted, but I didn't... And then there he is, on the road and missing his family and he wasn't able to see them or talk to them whenever he needed to.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. Its ok. I love what I do and I wouldn't give it up. Its just hard sometimes." He told me and I heard the familiar noise of Billy telling him he was needed somewhere. "I guess you heard that."
"I always do," I laughed. "Talk to you later, Not Saying."
"Later, Not Tucker."
- - - -
I decided to take some of Not Saying's advice. My mom called later that afternoon to invite me over for dinner, and instead of telling her I had a date or had plans with Emma already, I told her I'd be there.
So here I stand, in front of the decent sized, split level house I grew up in. Just one street over from Justin, and two streets over from where Emma grew up.
"Madison!" My mom said happily as she gave me a hug. "How are ya?"
"I'm fine, mom," I smiled as I followed her to the kitchen where my dad was making chili. "Hey dad."
"Hey Madison," his thick dark hair was starting to grey, and I wondered how it had stayed dark this long after all the stress from the football team. "You goin' to the game this Friday? We're played Arnette-Mead."
"I work Friday nights, remember? I'm sure I'll see a few of your players there though," I told him. "I see that Taylor kid every week it seems."
"I told you. You're workin' that kid too hard." My mom said.
"I am not workin' that kid to hard," my dad mumbled as my mom and I started our own conversation.
"So I've heard you're hanging out with Justin."
"Yeah, well, you know..." I said and shrugged.
"I'm just pushing him. He's like Justin... Stubborn and tough, but smart... And a d.amn good football player," my dad continued and my mom and I gave him a look before waving him off.
"So are you dating anyone?"
I shook my head. "No."
"Well.. I met this guy the other day that would be perfect for you, sweetie," my mom said as she tucked her long strawberry blond hair behind her ear. I realized I looked so much like my mom then, and it was almost scary.
"Mom..."
"Best fullback I've seen since Justin too. Just promise me you'll come see us for when we play Dillon, k? I'm sure it will be well worth it to see my old school against my new school."
My mom and I both gave him the 'are you done?' look. "I'll come see it dad, I promise." I turned back to my mom when he heard my answer and we both laughed just a little.
"What? He's sweet. He just moved here, but he's not always here, so he's staying with his friend." My mom explained.
"And how did you meet him? Not at school I hope." I asked curiously. Usually the guys she ever saw were still in high school, and if she was setting me up with someone, I wanted to make sure he was actually close to my age.
"Oh, he lives across the street in the rental that Buddy has," she told me. "He's actually coming over here for dinner tonight. His friend too. You'll like him, hon. He's just your type."
"Mom..."
"And your sister is coming too, with Gracie and Timothy." She told me excitedly. She loved it when she could get the whole family together like this, and I had to admit that it was pretty nice. The doorbell rang and her face lit up. "That must be them!"
I laughed as I followed her to the door. She gave me a giddy look as she pulled the door open to reveal my sister, Kourtni and her two kids along with two other guys.
"Madison, I didn't think you'd come," Kourtni said as she gave me a hug and handed Timothy off to me. I hadn't seen Timothy since he was born, and that was almost a year ago. I really am terrible...
"Madison, Kourtni, this is Teddy, and this is Tucker," my mom explained and I did everything I could not to look shocked when I heard the name Tucker. It couldn't be...

omg... i love friday night lights! lol its ridiculous how obsessed with that show i am. hahaha its just such a good show. everyone should watch it. i love how real it feels. like whatever happens on the show could happen in real life and since the actors get to improvise, it makes everything like 10000000000000000 times better.

Anime? Seriously. Whatever floats your boat I guess. But seriously, Friday Night Lights is THE best show ever written/improvised. Love love love it. Are you watching it on NBC or did you get to watch it early & commercial free on Directv? I almost cried when Street left... I was like "Riggins is crying... And the only other time he ever cried was when he watched the game film when Street got hurt." Ok, seriously, now I should be apologizing for going on and on about this. I seriously need help. But its so good that its worth talking on and on about! Haha So yeah... Anyway, about the story! I'm working on some more right now so hopefully (if I can type for, like, a whole hour or two straight), there will be an update tonight... ...But if not tonight, then sometime this week.
