Chapter 11During the next day, Roxy’s cell had been ringing non-stop. She could never bring herself to pick it up and talk to Teddy, but the song she had set as her ringtone, was quickly becoming annoying.
Teddy was about to hang up again, when he heard her small voice answer on the other end of the line. “Hello?”
“Hey.” Teddy said sweetly, and then paused. “I wanted to talk to you about last night.”
Roxy walked over to her bay window in her bedroom, hugging a pillow in her lap, and gazed out at the snow covered ground. “Teddy, what am I supposed to say? You have a girlfriend.”
“I know that, but--” Teddy started, but Roxy cut him off.
“We can’t do this. Teddy, I can’t be with you. Not like this.” Roxy’s mouth went dry and she tried swallowing the lump forming in her throat.
“Don’t you think I realize that?” Teddy sighed.
“Are you going to tell Claire?” She grew nervous at how Claire would now view her if she heard the news.
Teddy mulled over the idea for a moment. “I’m not sure I should.”
“What do you mean?”
“I care about her a lot, and I don’t want to hurt her, but...” Teddy didn’t finish his sentence, making Roxy grow antsy while tears were forming.
There was an awkward pause that had never settled over Roxy and Teddy before, making both feel uncomfortable and all Roxy wanted to do was hang up. Teddy wasn’t making any sense and it was clear that his feelings were undecided between the two girls.
Roxy gained the courage and spoke, “Teddy, I’m beginning to think the kiss was a mistake.”
When she said the kiss was a mistake, Teddy’s heart broke in two. He got an empty feeling in his stomach and his throat closed. He knew he couldn’t keep this up much longer. It wasn’t fair to anyone. “But Roxy, I--”
“I’m sorry.” Roxy was able to squeak out, interrupting him again, just before Teddy heard a click, letting him know she was gone.
Roxy stared at the cell phone in her hand, dropping it on the floor as she burst into tears. She was acting crazy. She had never let herself get this close to anyone before because of the fact that she would just have to say goodbye to them sooner or later. So why did she let her guard down with Teddy? She sat there weeping until her eyes were too tired to cry anymore.
The radio was on low in the background, when the DJ announced the next song was named “Hold On,” by the Jonas Brothers.
“We don’t have time left to regret
Hold on
It will take more than common sense
Hold on
So stop your wondering, take a stand
Hold on
Cause there’s more to life than just to live
Hold on”Roxy opened her window, letting the fresh air sting her face and run through her hair. The cold was more than she could handle, but she didn’t want to close it yet, so she put on her navy blue sweatshirt that was slightly too big for her, and cuddled back on the bay window’s bench.
“Cause an empty room can be so loud
It’s too many tears to drown them out
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
One single smile, a helping hand
Hold on
It’s not that hard to be a friend
Hold on
So don’t give up, stand ‘til the end
Hold on
Cause there’s more to life than just to live
Hold on”The moon was like the dark sky’s nightlight. The snow-filled clouds had made their way out, leaving the sky twinkling with stars. Roxy closed her eyes, letting the lyrics envelop her emotions.
“Cause an empty room can be so loud
It’s too many tears to drown them out
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
When you love someone, and they break your heart
Don’t give up on love, have faith, restart
Just hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
When it falls apart, and you’re feeling lost
all your hope is gone, don’t forget to
Hold on
Hold on
Cause an empty room can be so loud
It’s too many tears to drown them out
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
When you love someone, and they break your heart
Don’t give up on love, have faith, restart
Just hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
Cause an empty room can be so loud
It’s too many tears to drown them out
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
When you love someone, and they break your heart
Don’t give up on love, have faith, restart
Just hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on”After the song was over, Roxy picked up her guitar and book of sheet music, letting her feelings flow onto the pages. She hadn’t been working on it long before she knew it was finished. When she was happy with it on the guitar, she tried it on her keyboard, realizing she loved it better on the piano. She took her pen and at the top of the music, she wrote the title; Come Down To Me.

“I really don’t think this is a good idea.” Roxy spoke as her and Emma entered a house party of someone on the football team. There were tons of people around, most of them drinking. “I don’t drink!” She said over the music.
“Neither do I, but it’ll be fun! You’ve been acting weird all week and you need to get out of the house! I think all that homework is starting to get to you!” Emma yelled back as she pulled Roxy further inside.
“I don’t know..” Roxy had never been comfortable in these types of situations. She was never the party girl and would rather be watching a movie at home.
“C’mon Rox. Neither of us came here to drink. We’re just going to hang out, talk to people, and have fun!” Emma gave Roxy a reassuring squeeze on the hand. “Now I’m going to go find Ryan. He was meeting me here. Will you be ok by yourself?”
“Uhh..yeah. I suppose.” And quicker than lightening, Emma was gone in the crowd.
“I didn’t know you’d be here.” A voice came from behind her. Roxy turned around to see Austin standing before her.
Roxy smiled at his happy expression. “I don’t usually come to these types of things. Emma dragged me here.”
“Well, I’m glad she did.” Was he flirting with her?
Roxy blushed. “I’m glad she did too.”
“Would you like to dance?” Austin asked, offering his hand.
Roxy placed her hand in his. “I would love to.”
After spending a good thirty minutes dancing to the music blasting from the stereo, both were parched, and headed toward the kitchen for some refreshments, hand-in-hand.
“What do you want?” Austin motioned towards the coolers.
“Just a water please.” Roxy spoke, having to raise her voice a bit for him to hear her.
A moment later, Austin came back with two waters, and handed one to her before untwisting his cap and taking a long pull from his.
“Don’t drink?” Roxy notice his choice in beverages, when there were beers and kegs in every direction.
“No.” He paused looking at his water. “It’s basketball season, and I would have to be brain dead to get caught with alcohol and get kicked off the team when I’m hoping for a scholarship.” His answer made her think that he drank outside of basketball season, but then he leaned in closer, “plus, I never cared for the stuff.”
“Me neither.” She answered, delighting in the fact that they had something in common.

Around one in the morning, the party was really getting started, yet Roxy had already been there for a good three hours and her curfew was nearing the end. She kept checking her watch, which Austin noticed.
“Have a curfew?” Austin leaned in, smiling as they sat on the porch outside, watching their peers having a good time. They had only been sitting for a few moments, wanting to rest after dancing so much.
Roxy blush with embarrassment. “Yeah. I just got it pushed back to 1:30 and if I break it, I’m grounded for two weeks.” She rolled her eyes.
Austin gave a chuckle. “I know how that is. I need to get going soon too. Do you want me to give you a ride home?”
Roxy looked nervous, not sure if she should say yes. Of course, she had just spent the last few hours with him and he seemed like the gentleman type, but there are a lot of creeps out there, and she could never be too safe.
Austin laughed at her expression, obviously knowing what she was thinking. He threw his hands up in surrender. “I just want to drive you home. No strings attached. I won’t even kiss you if you don’t want.” Roxy laughed at this. “Even better..I’ll just drive by your house real slow and you can jump out if you want!” Roxy playfully nudged him in the shoulder.
“Alright, you can drive me home, but I need to let Emma know first since she drove me here.” Roxy stood up and then grabbed Austin’s hands to help him up.

After finding Emma, who was actually excited about the idea, they were on their way to Roxy’s house.
“Oh my gosh! Turn it up, I love this song!” Roxy exclaimed as “Stacy’s Mom,” by Bowling For Soup came on.
“Oh, wow, I haven’t heard this song since my middle school days.” Austin laughed, turning up the radio, as Roxy began singing along to it. Austin’s crystal blue eyes danced over her, impressed that she wasn’t afraid to be herself, unlike so many girls he had dated before. He wondered if that’s what had initially intrigued him; she was different.
They both sang along to the tune until it ended and a more recently released song came on, which Roxy had heard about a billion times before and was getting rather sick of. But before Roxy could think about it long, she had to give Austin directions through her neighborhood.
“And it’s the blue house on the right.” She pointed to the house, which held her yellow VW. Austin parked his Jeep on the street, and looked at Roxy. “Walk me up?” She asked, smiling.
“Love to.” Austin got out and met Roxy on the other side of the car. Surprisingly, she grabbed onto his arm, huddling in closely when a gust of wind blew by. Austin smiled, and put his arm around her.
When they reached the porch, Austin let go of her waist, while she searched for her keys. When she found them, she looked up at him and couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you for driving me home. It was awfully sweet of you.”
“I guess I’m just a sweet guy.” Austin joked and Roxy playfully hit him.
Then without warning, a silence spilled over them, like you’d see in a cheesy love movie, as Austin stepped closer and placed on hand on Roxy's cheek. Their blue eyes locked with the other, when Roxy blurted out, “you don’t have a girlfriend, do you?”
Austin smiled, shaking his head, “no.” Both of their eyes then closed, and they shared in a kiss.
