Chapter 4
I approached the front door of Jamie’s house, and I could see Teddy standing outside on the front porch…waiting. For some reason seeing him standing there just had me really nervous. At first I thought my nerves were gone, but they came back as I put my hand on the door knob and began to slowly open the door.
“Hi,” I said with a smile as I stepped outside and hugged Teddy. “You look nice.”
“Thanks,” Teddy replied as he shut the door behind me. “You don’t look so bad yourself. I am just glad you agreed to go with me.”
“I was just glad Alyssa approved of it. I thought she was going to shoot my head off when she found out you had asked me.”
“She isn’t like that.”
“I know. I should’ve known since she is one of my best friends, practically like a sister…her and Jamie both.”
“They are both pretty cool girls.”
“Yep, I love them to death. Anyways, that’s enough talk about me. Where are we going for dinner?”
“Have you been to the new place downtown?”
“Are you referring to the Pancake House?”
“I think that’s the name of the place, yeah.”
“Nope, I haven’t yet. Jamie, Alyssa, and I had plans to go there sometime next week. Are we going there tonight?”
“That is where I had planned on going, yes. Is that okay with you?”
“I would eat pretty much anywhere in town.”
“Well…good then,” Teddy said with a smile as he opened the passenger side door for me.
-Be There For You-
The car ride over to the Pancake House was fairly quiet. There wasn’t much conversation except for the usual ‘Are you cold, hot, warm, what?’. I didn’t really know what to say around Teddy. I wasn’t comfortable just yet. Maybe the actually dinner would be a little better.
“You know it’s okay to talk around me,” Teddy said as we entered the restaurant. “I’m not going to bite you or anything.”
“I know. I’m just nervous. I always tend to get nervous when I am out on dates, especially since I’ve only been on one real date. I promise I will get more talkative as the night goes on,” I replied with a shrug of my shoulders as we were greeted by a hostess.
“Booth for two please,” Teddy said with a smile. “I sure hope you’ll get a little more talkative,” Teddy somewhat laughed as we followed the hostess to our table.
-Be There For You- -Alyssa’s POV-
“So…how do you think the big date is going?” Jamie asked as we sat in her living room watching our favorite show, Laguna Beach.
“It seems to be going fairly well. I am sure if it was going awful that Kourtni would have called us by now,” I said in response to Jamie’s question.
“I just hope he is super nice to her. Her last relationship, well…that guy was a total dud. He never took her out anywhere!”
“I can tell you from experience that Teddy is far from a dud. He is going to treat every and any girl he dates like a princess. That’s just how he is.”
“I am just so jealous of her! I wanted to be the one out on a date with Teddy. Don’t you think it is uber weird, them being on a date, seeing as how she doesn’t really like his music?”
“She will be listening to his CD non-stop after tonight; I have a feeling.”
“I hope so! Maybe after tonight she will actually let us listen to his CD when we are riding around with her in her car.”
“Maybe,” I laughed as Jamie changed the channel.
-Be There For You-
“So, what are you going to get?” I asked Teddy as I looked up at him.
“I haven’t actually decided yet. This may sound a little dorky or weird, but what do grits taste like? I’ve never had them…considering I live in New York and all,” Teddy replied.
“Grits are the best breakfast food there is. Why do you ask? Are you going to eat breakfast for supper?”
“I don’t know. I was considering it. What about you? What are you going to eat?”
“Um, I think I am going to go with my usual meal.”
“What would that be?”
“Chicken strips and French fries,” I said with a small giggle. “It never fails. No matter where I go I always end up eating chicken strips and fries…unless I’m at Pizza Hut.”
“So, I take it you like chicken…huh?”
“Yeah…I do,” I said with a dorky laugh. “Um, I have to go step outside to make a phone call real quick. I hope you don’t mind; I won’t be gone long.”
“Nope…it is fine with me. You go ahead,” Teddy said as I began to slowly get up from the table.
“I should be back soon,” I said as I headed to the front door.
-Be There For You-
Right as I stepped outside the restaurant, I dug around inside my purse for my cell phone. I had to call Jamie or Alyssa one to give them a report on how the date was so far.
“Gah…I hope she answers,” I said as I began to dial Jamie’s cell phone number.
“Hello,” Jamie answered seconds later.
“Hey…it’s me,” I replied.
“Oh no, is the date going bad? Is that what you called to tell me? Please don’t say that is the case.”
“Nope, it isn’t the case at all. The date is actually starting to get better. I am actually able to talk to Teddy without getting a lump in my throat. I think the nerves have officially gone away.”
“Well, that is very good to hear. You will never believe this.”
“What?”
“Teddy is talking to Alyssa about the date right now. He said that he is having a really good time with you, and he may even take you to see a movie or something afterwards.”
“Really?” I said excitedly.
“If I am lying then I am dying.”
“Aw, I really hope he asks me to go see a movie or something. I think I am starting to dig this guy.”
“I bet you will be hooked on his music by tomorrow.”
“Probably,” I laughed. “Well, I had better be getting back inside. It’s a little chilly outside, and I didn’t bring my jacket.”
“Alrighty…bye,” Jamie said. “Have a good rest of the date!”
“Thanks…and bye,” I laughed as I hung up my phone.
-Be There For You-
I walked back up to mine and Teddy’s table to find Teddy not there. I shrugged my shoulders and decided to sit down anyway. He probably just went to the bathroom.
“Hey stranger,” Teddy said with a smile as he sat back down in his seat. “Sorry, I had to make a quick trip to the bathroom after I talked to Alyssa.”
“Oh, you talked to Alyssa? Weird, I talked to Jamie,” I said.
“Yeah, Alyssa told me you were talking to Jamie. So, how do you think the date is going so far?”
“I don’t know. What do you think? How do you think the date is going so far?”
“I, personally, think that the date is going very well…considering you hate my music.”
“Could we not bring that subject up? Besides, if we go on more dates then I may have to like your music…right?”
“Not technically, but it would definitely be nice if you liked my music.”
“Do you mind if I have that copy that’s in your car? I don’t have a copy myself.”
“Yeah, you can have it. I’ve got more where that came from.”
“Good,” I smiled as the waitress handed us our food.
“What would you say if I asked you to go bowling after we finished our dinner?”
“Hm, I would probably say yes…but only because I love bowling,” I said and then followed by pausing. “I am just kidding. I would say yes because I love bowling, and it would be nice to spend a little more time with you…since we hardly know each other.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you are funny?”
“Nope, nobody has ever told me that…why? Do you think I’m funny? I don’t think I am funny at all. I am a total dork.”
“You are pretty funny to me.”
“Well, thanks…I guess.”
“You’re very welcome,” Teddy somewhat said with a laugh.
-Be There For You-
Dinner had come to quite the successful end. Teddy and I had even decided we would go bowling. This should be very interesting.
“And here we are,” Teddy said as we pulled into the bowling alley’s parking lot.
“I am so stoked. I haven’t been bowling in a long time,” I said somewhat excitedly as Teddy parked in a parking spot that was really close to the front door.
“But I thought you said you loved bowling?”
“I do love bowling but don’t ever have many opportunities to come down here.”
“You and the other two girls don’t come down here a lot?”
“We try to go at least once a month, but have failed the past couple of months. Each of us has been busy with various things this summer.”
“That’s how it is with me and my friends. I’m always on the road and hardly ever get to take time off to hang out with them.”
“So, I guess that’s also why it is hard for you to have a girlfriend?”
“That plays a part in it, yeah…but that isn’t the only reason. Another reason is just because I haven’t really found a girl that I have been extremely interested in, since Alyssa…but we see how that ended.”
“What ever happened between you and Alyssa? Why did the two of you break up?”
“We just grew apart, and she moved away and found interest in someone else.”
“You mean Chase?”
“I guess that’s his name.”
“Are you saying you’d like to get back with her?”
“No, I just wish we wouldn’t have ended on such a sour note.”
“Right,” I said as I got out of the car and headed into the bowling alley.
-Be There For You-
“You still want to bowl?” Teddy asked as he walked up to the table I had been sitting at, by myself, for nearly ten minutes.
“If you want to,” I shrugged.
“What’s up with you?” Teddy asked as he sat across from me.
“Nothing…can we just get started?”
“First I want to talk and work whatever it is out. You just seem extremely upset with me right now, and I don’t really like it.”
“Alright then, be honest with me. Do you want to get back with Alyssa or not? And Teddy, I’m being serious. I want the truth!”
“No, I don’t want to get back with Alyssa. I want something else.”
“Like what?”
“I want you.”
“What? You must be CRAZY Teddy. We barely even know each other. How could you possibly want me? That’s just INSANE.”
“It may sound insane to you, but it isn’t. See, I’ve known about you for quite some time…actually ever since you and your ex-boyfriend broke up. Alyssa sent me and email and told me that I had to meet one of her best friends the next time I was down. She said you would be perfect for me. Well, here I am…and here you are.”
“Can we bowl now?” I asked as I got up from the table.
“Sure,” Teddy said as he stood up and followed me over to the counter.
-Be There For You-
“How about we make a bet on the game?” Teddy said as I sat in the chair tying my bowling shoes.
“What kind of bet are you speaking of?” I asked as I looked up at him.
“Let’s say that if I win, you have to give me a kiss. If you win I will give you a kiss. Is that a fair enough bet for you?”
“I think we should make it more interesting.”
“How so?”
“If I get the first strike of the game, you have to kiss me. And if you get the first strike of the game, then I will kiss you.”
“Hm, that does make it a little more interesting.”
“So, are we agreed on that bet?”
“Yep, we are agreed on that bet.”
“And I am up first,” I said with a smile as I prepared to take my first bowl. “I bet I get a strike.”
“We shall just see about that,” Teddy said as he sat in front of the scoring machine.
Seconds later I released my ball onto the little alley thing and it looked like I had won the bet. Somehow I had gotten lucky and gotten a strike.
“Can the kiss just wait until later?” Teddy said as I looked back at him to see his face turn a slight red color.
“Sure,” I smiled as I patted him on the back.
