Chapter 8
The next couple of days had come and gone. I was now at home with Teddy and little Addison. It felt so good to finally get back home this morning. Being at home was much better than being stuck in some crappy hospital bed.
“And this is what his bedroom looks like,” I said as Teddy and I walked inside Addison’s room for the first time together.
“It looks really good. I am so glad you were able to get help in finishing this,” Teddy said as he walked around the room with Addison in his arms. “This is your room little guy. Don’t you like it?”
“There’s one special thing that I added to this room. You have to see it because it means a lot to me.”
“Okay. What is it?”
“Come over here,” I said as I led Teddy to the dresser that was next to Addison’s crib. “Look at this picture. This was the two of us on our first date ever. Boy…I’ve sure changed a lot since then. Look at me now and look at me then, geez.”
“You still look beautiful,” Teddy said as he kissed my forehead and handed Addison over to me.
“What are you handing him over to me for?”
“He is hungry. If he needed a diaper change then I would’ve changed him.”
“You are taking over diaper duty…huh? Well, I guess I should be very thankful for that. But I don’t need to get too used to it though. Before I know it you will be gone again.”
“For the next couple of weeks, or however long I’m here, I am taking over diaper duty…yes.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I never expected a tough guy like you to admit that he was taking over diaper duty. Thanks,” I said as I kissed Teddy’s cheek.
-Just So You Know-
The next few hours passed and there wasn’t much commotion about the house. Teddy had taken over caring for Addison for a little while since I was just feeling extremely tired.
“What are my two favorite boys doing?” I said with a smile as I walked into the living room to find Teddy sitting on the couch with his guitar in hand.
“I was just singing Ad a few of my songs. He seems to like them,” Teddy said as he looked over at me. “He has stopped crying for now.”
“That’s good to know. Maybe he’ll grow up to be like you one day. I hope he does. I don’t want him to grow up and be like me, no talents whatsoever.”
“You aren’t talent-less Kourtni. I know you have a talent. I’ve seen it before.”
“And what would it be then? Please inform me because I have been missing out on it these past sixteen years of my life.”
“You have the talent of being a great mom. You are such a natural when it comes to being around kids. I hope Addison grows up to be like that, especially when he is married and his children of his own.”
“But I’m not married, so technically what you just said wouldn’t be completely true.”
“I love you,” Teddy said as he stood up and kissed my forehead.
“What? Am I missing something?”
“Not really,” Teddy said as he put his guitar down on the couch. “Look at Ad.”
“Okay?” I said in a somewhat confused tone of voice as I bent down to take a look at my sleeping baby boy.
I looked at Addison and noticed Teddy had changed his outfit while I was asleep. He was wearing a cute little onesie that I had bought for him, but now he was wearing a plain white onesie with some kind of writing on it.
“Read what it says…out loud,” Teddy said as he stood to the side of the couch.
“Mommy…please say yes,” I read as a confused look crossed my face. “Huh? I don’t get it.”
“Look at what’s around his neck on the little chain. Feel free to take it off of him.”
“It’s a ring. But what is he doing with a ring around his neck? I’m so confused here! You are going to have to help me out. I know I’m probably sounding really dumb to you, but I have no clue what is going on here.”
“Just take the chain off of his neck and hand it over to me. I’ll then take it off and explain to you what it’s for, okay?”
“But he’s asleep; I don’t want to wake him up.”
“If you’re really careful he won’t wake up Kourtni.”
“Someone is getting a little cranky,” I said as I lifted Addison’s head up long enough for me to remove the chain off of his neck and hand it over to Teddy. “I’m sorry little guy,” I said as I leaned over and kissed his forehead.
“I am not cranky! I am just a little nervous…that’s all,” Teddy said as he began pacing around the living room.
“You were fine five minutes ago. What’s going on? Are you breaking up with me? Are you leaving me? Please tell me whatever it is. I’m sure if that’s the case then I will understand.”
“That isn’t the case. I don’t think I could ever break up with you after all of the amazing things you have done for me. Look at the little guy; if it weren’t for you then I wouldn’t have him.”
“What are you trying to tell me or ask then?”
“Okay…I’m just going to come right out and say it,” Teddy said as he began to bend down onto one knee. “You don’t know how much I love you right now. After seeing all the pain you went through on my birthday, I don’t know if I will ever be able to repay you…but I hope this helps. Kourtni, will you marry me?”
“WHAT? So that’s what the ring was for?”
“Yep, that’s what the ring was for. Now could you please give me an answer?”
“YES!” I yelled as I jumped up and knocked my foot on Addison’s car seat. “Ow, that hurt.”
“I am sorry you hurt yourself.”
“Let’s put that behind us. GIVE ME THE RING FOOL!” I laughed as I managed to stand up on what appeared to be a bruised ankle.
“Hey, I am not a fool!”
“Okay, I apologize. Teddy…you aren’t a fool. Now, could you PLEASE give me the ring? I wasn’t really able to get a good look at it.”
“Give me your hand,” Teddy said as I extended my hand as he followed by putting the ring on my left ring finger.
“So…how does it feel to be engaged?” a familiar voice asked.
I looked up and it was Kaylie. I hadn’t seen her since little Addison was born three days ago.
“KAYLIE!” I yelled as I ran over and gave her a big hug. “It feels amazing.”
“Congratulations,” Jesse said as he came around the corner and gave me a hug.
“Thanks babe,” I said with a laugh as I backed out of the hug and noticed Addison was starting to wake up. “I had better go get the little guy. He’s probably ready for a bottle or something.”
“Can I give him his bottle?”
“Of course you can Jess, you are his godfather. Just let me go into the kitchen and get his bottle all fixed up. For now someone’s probably going to have to keep him occupied. He may start crying.”
“Why don’t I help you out with that? We need to let these two lovebirds have a little time with their godson,” Teddy said as he followed me into the kitchen.
-Just So You Know-
“I hope Ad isn’t acting up too much,” I said to Teddy as I mixed up Addison’s bottle.
“We don’t hear him fussing, do we? Besides…I’m sure Jesse could sing for him too. He seems to like when people sing to him. It puts him to sleep real easily,” Teddy said as I put the bottle into the microwave.
“Does your mom know?”
“Does my mom know about what?”
“Does she know about us?”
“Oh, you mean about us getting engaged? Yes, she knows about that…and so does your mom.”
“So pretty much everyone that needs to know about it knows, right?”
“Yep, I think my mom managed to get up with all of the important people on my side of the family. I think your mom was supposed to call anyone she could think of too.”
“So basically I was the only one who didn’t know about it?”
“Until now, yes, that was the case.”
“I am surprised you managed to keep a secret for that long! You aren’t typically the best secret keeper ever.”
“Hey, at least I don’t tell the minute I find something out like you do. Whenever you hear something good you had to run and tell someone.”
“I can’t help myself. I’m a girl,” I laughed as I grabbed Addison’s bottle out of the microwave.
-Just So You Know-
“Here you are Jesse,” I said as I handed Jesse the bottle. “He probably won’t take the whole bottle, so just come let me know when he’s done. I’ll have to bring you a burping cloth.”
“Where are you going?” Jesse asked as he began to feed Addison. “Never mind, that isn’t any of my business. You go do whatever you were going to do. Either Kaylie or I will come and find you whenever he’s finished eating.”
“Alrighty then,” I laughed as I followed Teddy up the stairs.
-Just So You Know-
“I am so glad that Jess and Kaylie came over,” I said as I sat on my bed and stretched out.
“But you just woke up from a nap like thirty minutes ago. And why are you calling him Jess? You act like you’ve known him your whole life,” Teddy said as he sat down at my computer.
“Please don’t get an argument started, okay? Let’s just enjoy the time we have together while it lasts. I’m sure it won’t be long before one of them is up here to let us know he needs a diaper changed or something.”
“I wasn’t trying to start any argument. I just wanted to know.”
“There isn’t any specific region. I call him Jess just like I call you Ted sometimes. If it makes you angry then I won’t call him that anymore.”
“No, you can still call him that. I was just curious…that’s all.”
“If you for one second thought that there was something between me and Jesse, PLEASE get it out of your head. There isn’t and won’t ever be anything between the two of us. After all…I am your fiancée, aren’t I?”
“Of course you are,” Teddy said as he sat down on the bed next to me. “How about we take a little nap or something? It seems like the three are doing pretty okay down there. It wouldn’t hurt.”
“But what if Ad gets sick or something? I would be a nervous WRECK if they weren’t able to wake me up or something.”
“Kourtni, I’m sure everything will be okay.”
“Okay then, I guess we can take a nap. I need one even though I just got up from one not even an hour ago.”
-Just So You Know-
“Hey you two…wake up. Kaylie and I need to be leaving,” Jesse said as he began to shake me and Teddy. “We have a party that we need to be getting to.”
“Woah…how long were we out for?” Teddy asked as he sat up and rubbed his eyes. “It feels like I’ve been out all night.”
“You’ve been out for about three hours. Now here…take your baby,” Jesse said as he handed Addison over to Teddy. “It was good getting to visit with you two, but we have to be going. Kaylie and I are the guest of honors and we’re almost late. It would be awful if we were late to a party that was being given in honor of Kaylie.”
“Geez Jesse…you almost hurt the little guy,” Teddy said as Jesse slammed the door and hurried down the stairs. “I don’t know what’s up with him.”
“I don’t want to know what’s up with him,” I sighed as I sat up and took Addison away from Teddy. “Hey little guy, how was it with that crazy couple? I know they probably don’t seem very fun to you, but I promise you they are. You will just have to get used to them.”
“He appears to be bored.”
“No, that’s the look of a little boy with a dirty diaper. Looks like you have a job to do,” I laughed as I handed Addison over to Teddy. “Take it away Diaper Deputy.”
“What the…please don’t tell me that is my new nickname.”
“It may just be your new nickname. I’m not real sure though. The ideas are still flowing into my brain,” I laughed as Teddy walked across the hall.
-Just So You Know-
“We are all done mommy,” Teddy said as he walked back into my bedroom with Addison.
“Thank you daddy,” I said as Teddy handed Addison over to me. “Guess what we get to do tonight for the first time.”
“I don’t know. What are we doing?”
“We get to give Addison his first bath in the kitchen sink! It should be very adventurous, not to mention a lot of fun.”
“Great, I’m totally there. Should I put on a pair of swimming trunks just in case he gets me wet?”
“No Ted, you’ll be just fine in what you are wearing now.”
“But this is my favorite polo shirt.”
“Well then, change into a t-shirt.”
“Fine then…I will,” Teddy laughed as he took off his polo shirt and went to grab a t-shirt from his suitcase.
“Ooh sexy,” I laughed.
“Would you like me to strike a pose?”
“Hang on…let me get my camera,” I laughed as Teddy began to put on his t-shirt.
-Just So You Know-
“So…that was fun,” Teddy said as he carried Addison up to his room so that he could put Addison’s pajamas on.
“Yeah, it was fun. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be either. He actually liked taking a bath…that’s a definite good thing,” I said as we walked into Addison’s room.
“Yep, I have to agree with you on that. I’m so glad he likes taking baths. We would have had a lot of trouble had he hated taking a bath like a lot of little babies do.”
“Thanks for helping out today,” I said as I gave Teddy a hug. “You don’t know how much I appreciate you being here right now. I understand that you’ll probably have to leave tomorrow, but I’m just glad you got to come for at least a few days. Anytime that I can spend with you is great.”
“I don’t have to leave for another three or four days, a week at the latest.”
“You have said that before, and it always ends up being within the next few hours or so. If that happens now, then that’s why I went on and let you know I was glad you were here for the time that you were. At least you got to come home. There are some people who don’t even get to go and visit their kids.”
“I know. But once I get back out on the road chances are I won’t be able to come back until Christmas.”
“I understand sweetie, but it’s your job…so I will understand. And I’m sure Addison would understand if he was old enough.”
“In case I have to get up and leave during the middle of the night there’s a few things I need to tell you. I love you…just so you know.”
“I knew that silly,” I said as Teddy’s cell phone began to ring. “I bet I know who it is and what the phone call is about. You might want to start down to your house.”
“How about whenever I come back we start making plans for the wedding, okay?”
“Alright,” I nodded as Teddy wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. “There isn’t any need for you to be consoling me right now. Tell your son goodbye. I’m the one who is used to this now.”
“Here you go again with the guilt trip.”
“Ted, how can you say that…honestly? I’m not trying to make you feel guilty! That is the honest truth! You’ve left so many times over the course of our relationship. I think I have gotten used to it by now. Your son is the one who is going to be affected now. He isn’t going to have his daddy to sing him to sleep.”
“I can always call and sing him to sleep.”
“It won’t be the same Ted,” I said as I felt a tear roll down the side of my cheek. “And I promised I wouldn’t cry, but this is one promise I have to break. I can’t help but cry when you leave…especially now. We’ve got little Addison.”
“At least you can look at him and be reminded of me. Besides, I will be calling and emailing EVERY single day. I will take an hour out of my day to do one or the other just so I can know how my little man and his mom are doing.”
“Promise?” I asked as I looked up into Teddy’s eyes.
“I promise,” Teddy said as he kissed me. “I love you so much, okay?”
“Okay,” I nodded as Teddy kissed Addison goodbye.
“Goodbye little buddy, I’ll talk to you soon. Now you had better be good for your mommy. If you are good then I may just send you a pretty sweet gift in the mail.”
“You had better be going.”
“See you soon,” Teddy said as he kissed my forehead and walked out of the room.
When Teddy left the room, I broke down. How was I going to be able to deal with Addison all by myself? I wouldn’t have made it through the past three days without Teddy. He’s the one who has been doing most of the work, not me.
