Chapter 9
Another couple of months had passed, and life without Teddy was pretty complicating. It wasn’t easy taking care of Addison without the assistance of Teddy. Sure Teddy would call and send emails, but he was never actually THERE to help out when I needed him most.
It was nearing Christmas day, and I was anticipating the day Teddy would get back home. I was anxious for him to hold Addison again. Since he had left Addison had gotten pretty big for a three month old baby.
“Hey baby boy,” I said with a smile as I lifted Addison out of his crib. “We get to go shopping with Uncle Jesse today.”
Seconds later the door to Addison’s room was filled with a shadow. It was Jesse.
“So…what are you getting Teddy for Christmas?” Jesse said as he walked over to the crib.
“I haven’t decided yet. It’s a good thing you called and asked if we wanted to go shopping today,” I replied as I began to get Addison out of his pajamas. “Where’s Kaylie? I thought she was coming with us too.”
“Yeah, let’s not talk about Kaylie right now.”
“Oh? Did the two of you have some sort of fallout?”
“Yeah, we kind of stopped talking to each other as of last night. I know we weren’t even dating, but it’s like we broke up last night. You know what I mean?”
“I understand what you are trying to say…yes.”
“So…how are things with you and Teddy?”
“Well, it’s been about two days since I talked to him. We kind of had an argument two nights ago as well. It was a stupid argument and all my fault.”
“Do you want to tell me about it?”
“No, it’s okay. Let’s just get going and get some shopping done, at least let me get Teddy’s gifts. He is coming home later this afternoon, around two I think.”
“Do you want me to get Addison?”
“No thanks, he’s my baby…I think I can handle him.”
-Just So You Know-
Minutes passed and Jesse and I were now inside the mall doing some Christmas shopping. Teddy had called and apologized for overreacting so much the other night on the phone.
“So…I guess he apologized,” Jesse said as I grabbed Addison’s bottle from inside the stroller.
“What’s up with you? You have had this attitude all day long, and I’m sick of it,” I said as I took Addison out of the stroller and sat down where I could give him his bottle.
“I want you to tell Teddy the truth!”
“What are you talking about Jesse?”
“I want you to tell Teddy the truth about us.”
“What about us?”
“He needs to know that we knew each other way before he introduced us. He needs to know about the possibility of me being Addison’s father.”
“You aren’t Addison’s father Jesse! Get that out of your head. We never hooked up, got it? I made a simple mistake and made out with you, that’s ALL. Is that why you and Kaylie stopped talking? Oh no, she probably hates my guts right now.”
“Regardless of what you think, you need to tell Teddy the truth.”
“Alright…fine, I’ll tell him that I messed up and kissed you. Can’t you get over the fact that we never did anything more than that? Geez, maybe it was a mistake to go shopping with you,” I said I stood up and went to put Addison back in his stroller. “We will see you later,” I said as I strolled off in the direction of the Sunglass Hut.
-Just So You Know-
“Teddy…we have to talk,” I said as Teddy picked up his cell phone. “Jesse has been getting on my nerves about something he wants me to tell you, so I’m going to come out and tell you the truth. I messed up.”
“What do you mean you messed up?” Teddy asked curiously as Addison began to cry.
“I messed up on something, and I want you to know that I’m really sorry for it. It was stupid of me to do, and I have no idea why I did it. Now I feel like the stupidest person. You probably never want to talk to me again.”
“Kourtni, tell me what you did! You are confusing me by not letting me know exactly what happened. HOW did you mess up?”
“I’m scared to tell you Teddy. I’m scared you will call off the engagement or worse call it off with me and Addison for good.”
“You shouldn’t be scared to tell me anything Kourtni. I love you way too much to ever do something like that. I promise I won’t get mad at you for whatever you tell me.”
“I made out with Jesse. It was a long time ago…back when I was still carrying Addison. I don’t know why I did it, but I was stupid and did. I am REALLY sorry and completely understand if you never want to talk to me again.”
“Kourtni, calm down…everything is fine. Jesse called and explained the whole situation to me. He said it was all his fault and he felt awful for doing so.”
“But I still feel bad because I’m your fiancée.”
“Don’t worry about anything, okay? So…is my little man ready to see his daddy?”
“I think he’s pretty excited…yes. Right now he is helping me pick out Christmas presents for his daddy. And I may even pick up a few things for him as well.”
“I’m glad to hear that. It sounds like he is crying. Is he hungry or something?”
“No, he isn’t hungry. We just finished a bottle like five minutes ago. He isn’t feeling well for some reason. I am supposed to take him to the pediatrician after I get finished shopping.”
“Make sure you let me know about whatever the doctor said when you come to pick me up…alright?”
“Okay, I will. What time is it right now?”
“It’s about eleven thirty. You still have a little while to shop or whatever.”
“We need to be leaving so I can get this little guy to the doctor’s office. I’m sure it isn’t anything but a cold…but I have to make sure that’s all it is. I would feel horrible if it was worse than that.”
“Okay. I will see you two whenever I get back to Alabama. Bye,” Teddy said as he hung up his cell phone.
-Just So You Know-
“So…you talked to Teddy,” I said as I strolled up to the bench that Jesse was sitting at. “Thanks.”
“I was the one who messed up here…not you. I didn’t want Teddy to break up with you for something that I did,” Jesse shrugged as I sat down next to him. “Now I’m without a girl while the one I thought I wanted is just as happy as she can be with her fiancé.”
“I talked to Kaylie. She said she wants to go out with you for dinner tonight. And at least you haven’t lost me as a friend. I still want you to be friends with me and Teddy, as well as be a godfather to Addison. I don’t know what we would do without you. You are such a help.”
“I will still be there for Addison, yes. There is no way I could leave that little guy alone. As for us being friends…I don’t know if that is such a good idea.”
“Whatever you think,” I sighed as I looked in the stroller to find Addison asleep. “I think we had better be going though. I need to get Addison to the doctor so we can see what’s wrong with him.”
“Just leave me here. I just sent Kaylie a text. She is going to come and pick me up.”
“Are you sure? I don’t mind running you to your hotel or to whoever’s house.”
“It’s okay. I need to do some last minute shopping Christmas shopping. Christmas is only a week away you know.”
“Thanks for reminding me Jess,” I laughed as I stood up and began to walk away. “Call my cell if you need anything, okay?”
“Will do,” Jesse said as I neared the front doors of the mall.
-Just So You Know-
After leaving Jesse at the mall, I headed quickly over to the doctor’s office where I was now waiting on the pediatrician to call us back.
“Addison Geiger,” a nurse dressed in snowman scrubs said as she walked into the waiting room.
“That would be us,” I said with a smile as I stood up with Addison in my arms.
“Second room on the left,” the nurse said as she held the door to the back part of the office open for us.
-Just So You Know-
“So…what’s wrong with him?” I asked the doctor as we sat in her office waiting to get the reports on what was making Addison feel so bad.
“The little guy just has his first cold and that’s all. It isn’t major at all. We are going to give you some cold medicine to give him at least once a day, and he should be better in a few days….hopefully before Christmas,” the doctor said as she handed over a prescription to me. “Is his dad out in the waiting room? If so, I can just give this to him.”
“No ma’am, his dad is out of town right now. His plane is supposed to be landing at the airport in about fifteen minutes. He has been out of town doing some concerts.”
“Oh okay, well thanks for bringing the little guy to see us for the second or third time. If you have anymore problems just give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.”
“Thanks,” I said as I walked out of the office.
-Just So You Know-
“Are you ready to see daddy? Are you ready?” I said to Addison in excitement as we walked to the gate Teddy was supposed to be getting off. “He is going to be so excited to see you.”
I looked around and saw there were a bunch of girls standing around the tunnel, waiting for Teddy to get off. While they were all nervous about getting to meet him I just sat back and watched them fight each other for the first position in line.
“TEDDY!” the group of girls yelled as Teddy walked off the plane.
“SIGN THIS PLEASE,” some girl yelled as Teddy shook his head no and walked towards us.
“There are my two most favorite people in the whole wide world,” Teddy said as he kissed me and looked down at Addison. “So, what did the doctor say? Is he okay?”
“He is fine. The pediatrician said it is just his first cold. She said he should be over it within the next couple of days, definitely before Christmas.”
“Well…I am glad to know that he’s okay.”
“Yeah, I’m pretty happy too. I was scared for a little bit.”
“Let’s get on out of here before these girls get any worse, okay?”
“Got it,” I nodded as I followed behind Teddy.
