"So guess who borrowed a pen from me today..."
"The president?" Taylor laughed and I rolled my eyes at her. She was always saying ridiculous answers like that.
"No silly, Teddy."
"Oh. Might as well be the president." She giggled. "To you anyway."
"What?" I laughed at her. "That made no sense."
She let out a huge laugh as she tied her shoes. "I know."
"Come on babbles," I said as I held my hand out to help her up, and we headed out to the football field.
----------
"I want everything perfect. The jumps, the stunts, the cheers, it all has to be perfect," Coach Bradley informed us. She was a very strict cheerleading coach. "And we're going to wear the gold and black ribbons with the black uniforms with the gold writing. That's all. See you ladies tomorrow."
We were all dripping in sweat. It was October, but when you were practicing on the football field with a drill sargent for a coach, you were bound to sweat off five pounds.
"I am so tired." Taylor laughed. "I think I'm going to soak in the bathtub for, like, an hour."
I laughed and nodded along. "Sounds like a plan for me too."
We could hear Sadie having a conversation with another cheerleader. "I got the best dress ever. It's from the city, so no one here will have it! It's so beautiful, guys."
"Are you and Teddy still going to the dance together?" The other girl, most likely Jolie Brown, asked.
"Of course," she snorted. "He just can't resist me. I mean, come one, who couldn't?"
"I could," Tay mumbled, and I couldn't help but laugh as we hurried to grab our stuff and run out of there.
----------
We pulled up to my house a few minutes later, and I noticed my Dad's car wasn't there. I felt nervous, because I knew he was drinking, and as soon as he got home, I'd be on the receiving end of his wrath.
I smiled at Tay to hide my fears and waved goodbye as I stepped out. "I'll see you tomorrow morning."
"Don't forget your dress, we'll get ready at my house, k?" She was so perky and organized. I loved her for it, because if she weren't, we'd both be in trouble.
I smiled. "Ok. See you then."
She watched as I made my way inside, and then drove away when she knew I was safely inside. She always did this. It shows how great of a friend she really is.
----------
I finished my homework and re-heated the leftover food from the night before. By the time I was finished straightening up the kitchen from the small mess I had made, it was going on eleven o' clock. Usually my Dad was home by now.
I sighed as I left a lamp on for him and then made my way to my bedroom. I hung the two dresses on the back of my door before curling up under the covers and falling asleep.
----------
My alarm went off at six, like always. My Dad hadn't woke me up in the middle of the night. I quietly made my way to the shower, just in case he was sleeping, and then made my way to the kitchen for breakfast.
I heard a snoring noise coming from the living room and groaned when I realized my Dad was passed out in the middle of the floor, snoring like a train.
I wrote him a note and taped it to the TV - where he was most likely to see it - before heading out to where Taylor was waiting for me.
"What took so long?" She laughed.
"I had to write my Dad a note to remind him to be at the school by six thirty for Homecoming." I wasn't completely lying. I was just leaving out the small detail of him being passed out in the floor.
"I'm so excited!" She squealed in the driver's seat and I couldn't hep but laugh as her younger brother, Reid, groaned in the back seat. "Ty's going to be here. He got in last night!"
Ty was her older, half brother who looked nothing like her. Her Dad, Jimmy had been previously married, and Ty was the product of that relationship. We loved Ty, because he always included us in whatever he was doing. He sounded a little redneck at times (because he spent most of his time with his own Mother in Tennessee), but we loved him for it.
We clapped our hands together excitedly. "So I totally know Chris is voting for you!"
"Well he better, or else I'd have to hurt my own boyfriend."
"You guys are together?! Why didn't you call me?!" My voice cracked and I giggled at myself.
"I did, but you must've been asleep. We didn't get off the phone until real late." She informed me and immediately felt dumb for not checking my phone this morning.
"Oh. Well I'm sure no one will actually vote for me." I mumbled to myself.
"Shut up! Don't ever say that! I'm voting for you."
"Why would you vote for me when you can vote for yourself?" I laughed at her.
"Because I want you to win." She smiled at me. "That's my job as the bestest, rockinest friend in the galaxy."
"Did you just say 'rockinest'?" Reid and I both asked at the same time, and we all burst into a fit of laughter.
I only hoped that today was as much fun as I was having right now.

The day went by pretty well, but now the thing I was stressing about was the fact that my own father had yet to show up on one of the biggest nights of my high school career.
"Calm down," Taylor was trying to fix the stuck zipper on the back of my dress. "Ty is going home to get that suit Dad made him buy and then he'll be back and you'll tell the announcer that he's your cousin, ok?"
She always had a plan. I wished I could be that way. My phone began to ring, and I reached to answer it.
"Hello?" No answer. "Hello? Dad? If that's you, you really need to get here...." I hung up frustratedly and tossed my phone back into my bag as I felt the back of the dress close.
"Got it! Now how did you get that bruise?" She asked be as she pointed to my shoulder.
"What bruise?" I tried to play it off like I didn't know what she was talking about. "I don't know. Practice maybe."
"Heather Sinclair?" She said unsurely, and I nodded quickly.
"Yeah... Uh... She's probably still not catching me right."
"I hope she doesn't get Queen," She changed the subject, and I suddenly felt relieved.
"As long as it isn't Sadie, I'm perfectly happy," I laughed as my phone began to ring again. "Hello?"
"Who is it?"
"Hello?" I asked again.
"I hope you win." They hung up, and I shrugged as I tossed my phone back into my bag.
Taylor snapped her phone shut and looked up at me. "Ty's here. He just told Mr. Lyons about the arrangement. But now, we have to get in line. He's waiting oustide for us."
She pulled me out of the chair, and Chris, Teddy, as well as Ty were standing out there to wish us all good luck. Teddy gave me a quick hug, and I couldn't help but feel a little relieved afterwards. He was so cute, I wonder who he voted for.
----------
"Addalyn Lewis is the daughter of Michael and Angela Lewis. Tonight she is escorted by her cousin, Ty Cohen." Ty giggled as we walked to our spot on the thirty yard line. "Taylor Cohen is the daughter of Jimmy and Helen Cohen and is escorted tonight by her father, Jimmy Cohen."
"I never thought I'd escort my sister's best friend in Homecoming," he laughed and I giggled along. "But it's cool. I like being your.. cousin."
I laughed at him and smiled as the yearbook staff took pictures of us.
Everyone was lined up and waiting for the results.
"Your 2006 Homecoming Queen is..." he paused for that dramatic effect, "Jamie Hanson."
The band section began to cheer, and it was then that I realized she was a band groupie, and that meant everyone in band voted for her, so even Sadie didn't stand a chance. I was happy for her, though. As long as it wasn't Sadie.
After lining up and taking pictures with the other girls, we made our way back to the locker rooms to change clothes as quickly as we could. We pulled our hair back and rushed out the field to join everyone else as half time ended and the second half began.
The very first thing we did was a ton of stunting. I was sure Taylor and I had never been thrown so high. Taylor was usually a base, but she was still small enough to be thrown, and since Danielle Reynolds was sick, she had to do it.
"I'm so glad that's over," Taylor grumbled as we formed our lines again. She wasn't a fan of the heights. I liked the wind in my face, though. It almost felt refreshing... It made me feel alive.
I giggled at her as we began another cheer. I had never cheered so much in my entire life. There was no time to take a break to take a look at the game, it was cheer, cheer, cheer, or die, die, die. Ok, I'm sure Coach Bradley wouldn't kill us, but she'd try.
I was never so happy to see the end of a football game. We rushed back to the locker rooms to change into our other dresses and look out our flat irons and curling irons as well as our make-up to do a few quick touch-ups before joining Chris and Teddy in the gym.
"Your hair looks so good curly," I told Taylor as I curled the ends of her dark brown hair. "You could be one of those California chicks with this hair, man."
She laughed at me as I stood in front of her and did my eye make-up. "So... Are you sure you don't know where that bruise came from?" She was genuinely concerned, I could tell. "Because I'm starting to get worried. I mean, you know... I'm your best friend, and I'd hope you would tell me about something like that."
I laughed. "I'm fine, ok? I swear... It's probably just from practice."
She gave me an unsure look but then nodded. "Ok." She held her hand out and pulled me out of my chair and we linked arms to walk out of the locker room and into the lobby of the school. "You look totally sexy tonight, by the way. If I was Ted, I'd.. you know."
"Shut up," I ran my hip into hers playfully and we giggled as we pushed the doors open and joined Teddy and Chris.
----------
"So you look really nice tonight," Teddy told me as we sat at a table in the gym while Chris and Taylor were off dancing... or something.
I felt my cheeks getting warm. "Thanks."
"Do you want to dance? Because I'd like that, dancing with a pretty girl, I mean."
I felt my cheeks growing hotter, and it felt like the whole gym had suddenly turned into a sauna. "Sure. But only if you promise Sadie won't unleash her wrath on me."
"A sense of humor, I like it." He winked at me as we stood up and he wrapped his arm around me.
I really was starting to like this guy, and I didn't even know him.
----------
"So how was your night?" Taylor asked suggestively as she wriggled her eyebrows.
"What?"
"You know... The whole Teddy thing."
"Did you set that up?!" I laughed and she grinned sheepishly.
"Of course not, Chris and I were simply letting nature take its course."
"Well, Teddy is certainly cute. And nice." I said. "And I totally like him, Tay."
She let out a huge squeal, and for a moment I thought I was going to have to drive home.
"I'd like to get home safely," I laughed as we pulled onto her street. It was funny how her house was what I called home.
"Hey I'm an excellent driver," She laughed as she pulled into her driveway and we pulled our bags out of the back seat. "But its so totally awesome that you like him! I can play Cupid!" She was shaking her fists from side to side as she shook her head and pumped her legs up and down like she was part of the movie 'Flashdance'.
"If you weren't standing up, I'd think you were having a seizure."
"Shut up," She stuck her tongue out at me as we walked inside.
Tonight was probably the best night of my life. I was totally crushing on Teddy.

"You can stay another day if you'd like," Tay offered, but I shook my head.
"I'm sure my Dad's missing me." Yeah right, more like missing the abuse he gives me. "Plus I've got homework in Algebra due tomorrow."
"Oh yeah! That reminds me! I have homework too," she said goofily as she held her index finger up in the air like she had just thought of some genius idea. She giggled as she wrapped her arms around me. "See you tomorrow, babe."
"Bye," I waved as I got out of her car and entered my house. Luckily my Dad wasn't home.
I ran upstairs and straightened up my room, making sure to dust and vacuum every nook and cranny in hopes that it would please my Dad. Afterwards, I ran downstairs and straightened things up in the living room before running the vacuum through it as well.
"Hello?" I asked as I pulled my phone out of my back pocket. No answer. "Hello? Ok, this is really starting to bug me." I hung up and thrust the phone in my back pocket and went back upstairs to get started on I disagreeignments.
----------
"ADDALYN!" I heard my name just after the familiar slam of the door. "GET THE HELL DOWN HERE!"
I came as quickly as I could, making sure I didn't trip on the stairs.
"Where the hell have you been?" He hissed angrily. His eyes were blood shot and he reeked of beer.
"I was at Tay's, like every weekend."
"You were supposed to be here!" He roared. I tried not to show my fear, but it was hard. "Clean this filthy house!"
"But Dad I -"
He pushed me down and the side of my face hit the floor. "Don't argue with me." I stood up and he pushed me again, this time into the corner of the wall, which hit just beside my eye socket.
I tried not to cry at the pain as I got out all the cleaning supplies and went to work on the house again. Apparently I wasn't good enough for my own Dad.
----------
"Hello?" I asked groggily after picking up my vibrating phone. "Hello?"
I heard a slight release of air on the other end, like someone sighing, but then hung up, because it was just a little creepy for someone to keep doing this.
I rolled over in an attempt to at least get another hour of sleep before I had to get up for school.
----------
"Hey Tay, have you seen Addalyn?" He asked as he joined Taylor and Chris at Chris' locker.
She shook her head. "She called me and told me she had a dentist appointment and that she'd be in later."
"Oh... I'm just kind of worried about her. I mean, I know this sounds weird, but I've always watched her long before I even spoke to her."
"Wow, that doesn't sound like a stalker at all," Chris laughed.
Teddy smiled. "What I mean is... I've always had an attraction to her, so I notice when she's around that she always seems sort of... inferior to everyone else, like they're going to drastically criticize something she's done."
"She's just sensitive like that," Taylor stood up for her friend. "I guess thats where the two of us balance out."
"Well, did you notice the bruise on her shoulder the other night? I noticed another one she had on her arm a few weeks ago... And then the time she was in the hospital a couple days... I'm just kind of... worried."
"She says she's fine," she said. "And I don't want to scare her away by being to inquisitive."
He nodded. "Ok. I'll see you guys at lunch."
Chris gave her a quick kiss before joining his friend in their first class of the day.
----------
"Hey guys, I'm here." I said as I joined them at lunch. I had lied about the dentist so I could spend extra time trying to hide the long bruise on my cheek.
"How was the dentist?" Teddy asked, and I couldn't help but feel a little guilty for lying.
"No cavaties!"
"Awesome!" Tay held up her hand in a high-five, a gesture I returned before sitting down next to her. I only hoped no one would notice the extra amount of make-up or the way I was pulling my hair across it to add even more camoflauge. "We were just talking about you."
"Oh really?" I asked nervously.
"And how much we love you. You're so cute," she pinched my cheeks and I couldn't help but wince. It hurt like hell.
"Ow, not so hard," it slipped, I swear. I hoped no one would notice.
"You're so sensitive," she mock-teased and I laughed along.
"And if Heather Sinclair would quit jabbing her hands and elbows into my ribcage at practice, I would stop getting these bruises."
Ok, now I was totally covering and I knew it sounded cheesy. I only hoped no one would notice.
The bell rang, and we were all off on our separate ways again, only I wasn't so alone. Teddy was following me.
"Are you ok?" He asked and I turned around to face him.
"Fine." I smiled.
"You just seemed antsy."
"It happens when you've just had a whole Red Bull, I guess." I lied. I didn't even like Red Bull. I hated myself for lying like this.
"Oh ok.. Cool cool. I'll see you later."
See me later? Where was he seeing me later? Unless he decided to hang around with Chris for practice. Oh I hoped he didn't.
