Chapter 3:
“Show me good things come to those who wait.” David Archuleta “You Can”.
A little over a month ago my dad was inaugurated at the forty-fourth president of the United States. Living in the White House was interesting, to say the least. I had yet to get used to it...or go in all of the two hundred plus rooms. A good thing about having your dad as president is you pretty much get to do anything you want, which for me included getting to know Teddy Geiger.
It’d been four weeks since I’d seen him too. We’d been texting, calling, and messaging on MySpace. Teddy had told me he wasn’t busy, but at the last minute a few shows came up, so he had to get back to New York and get all of his stuff together before hitting the road. For the most part I was okay with him being gone, mainly because we were just friends, but I was upset at the fact he was going to be gone on Valentine’s day. I was at least hoping we could see each other then...since it fell on a Saturday this year, but that didn’t happen.
It’s Valentine’s Day now, and my mom and dad are going to be out celebrating tonight. Me, I’ll be stuck in the White House...doing nothing.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go sweetie?” my mom asked as she passed through the TV room with my dad.
“No...this is yours and dad’s alone time. I don’t want to intrude. I’ll be fine,” I said, putting on a fake smile.
“You know what to do if you need us,” dad told me.
“Okay, you two have fun!”
Within seconds they were gone. I was all alone in this BIG house...well, not completely alone, but for the most part I was all by myself. Watching movies and TV shows quickly got old, so I decided I’d try calling Teddy...again.
“Hello,” he finally answered, after having tried him at least twenty times.
“It’s about time you answer your phone! I’ve been calling and texting you all day? How come you haven’t answered? I just want you to know that I’m HIGHLY bored and could’ve used someone to talk to,” I vented.
“Sorry, I’ve been busy...in and out of shows, doing photo shoots.”
“Are you sure? Something tells me I shouldn’t believe you.”
“Come on, you’ve gotten to know me a little over the past month. Do you think I’d lie to you and treat you like this...purposely ignore you?”
“Hm, I don’t know...anything’s possible.”
“Oh yeah, happy Valentine’s day!”
“Yeah, it’s been a pretty crappy day. My parents have been celebrating, and I’ve been sitting around...not how I wanted to spend my holiday.”
“I’m sorry to hear about that,” Teddy sighed.
“Miss Kourtni, these just came for you,” one of the housekeepers said as I looked back and saw her carrying in a dozen pink roses.
“Hang on...can I call you back? I just got some roses, and I’m going to try and figure out who they are from,” I said to Teddy.
“Okay...talk to you then,” Teddy said before quickly hanging up his phone.
I scanned the card after ripping the envelope open. There was no name. All the card said was to come to my bedroom, which I found weird. I scanned the card again, analyzing the writing, and I couldn’t recognize the handwriting.
“I guess Teddy’s out of the question,” I shrugged as I did like the card said and walked towards my room.
The minute I opened my bedroom door I saw several lit candles all over the place...vanilla candles, my favorite. I rounded the corner and caught a glimpse at my bed. Rose petals were scattered all over my bedspread and my floor. Seated on my bedside table were another dozen pink roses.
“Surprise,” a voice whispered as the mystery person snuck up behind me, placing his hands over my eyes.
“Teddy, is that you?” I questioned as the hands were lifted off of my eyes. “It is you!” I screamed when I saw Teddy standing in front of me. “I feel bad for yelling at you.”
“Ah, it’s alright...you’re forgiven,” he smiled, wrapping his arms around me in a hug.
“What are you doing here? Why are you doing this for me? I deserve none of this.”
“I’m doing this for you because you’re special...in a good way. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you over these past couple of weeks, and I think it’s about time we take this to the next level.”
“Next level?”
“Basically what I’m trying to get at is...will you be my girlfriend?”
“I...I don’t know what to say.”
“Let me help you out a little. It’s a three letter word...kind of rhymes with dress.”
“Yes,” I chuckled, my arms draping around Teddy’s neck. “Why’d you go to all this trouble though? Why the candles, the rose petals, and the second set of a dozen roses?”
“I was trying to make this as romantic as possible. Did it work?”
“Mhmm,” I smiled, biting my lip.
What followed was simple. I led Teddy over to my bed. We climbed up in it and snuggled together closely. For a while we just lay there and stared at one another. Then Teddy finally made a move...kissing my lips softly.
“Heyy...what was that for?” Teddy asked as I bit his lip.
“I don’t know. It kind of turns me on,” I shrugged.
“In that case, I’m not complaining.”
“Oh my goodness...this is the first time my dad hasn’t somehow found us and ruined the moment. I like this. Things like this should happen more often.”
“Well, now that we’re dating, they can happen more often.”
“Call me crazy, but I want to go on tour with you. I want us to cruise around in a bus, be together day in and day out.”
“Don’t you think it’s a little early in the relationship?”
“No, it’s actually a great start.”
“Okay, if you are okay with it, then fine. There’s just one problem. I don’t have a tour bus, in case you’ve forgotten. We’ve always driven around in a little van.”
“Oh no, I’m not doing that. That’ll have to change.”
“Unless I can somehow get a couple hundred thousand dollars by the end of next week, it’s not going to happen.”
“Let’s just see here...my dad’s President of the United States. I’m sure he can pull a few strings...get you the bus of your dreams,” I giggled, pressing my fingers against Teddy’s cheek.
“Wait until he finds out we’re dating. A hundred bucks says he’ll say no.”
“A hundred bucks? You’ve got yourself a deal Mr. Geiger.”
“You’re so cute.”
“I know,” I smiled.
“All of this makes me believe that good things do, in fact, come to those who wait.”
“Yeah, I’ve waited four years for a new guy to come into my life. Maybe this is a sign from God...telling me that I’m ready for a new relationship. Or, just maybe it’s telling me that I’ve found the right guy by waiting. I don’t know.”
“Something tells me your second guess is right.”
“How come you say that?”
“I say that because, well, that’s how I feel. I’ve been in and out of relationships, but there’s something different about this one. When I met you, that first night, I got this feeling...something I’ve never felt before, as cheesy as that sounds.”
“Aw, it doesn’t sound cheesy! It’s kind of romantic...in a way.”
For the next couple of minutes we just had a random conversation. It was probably the most random conversation I’d had with someone. We shared stupid and pointless facts about ourselves. It was cute, dorky, and romantic all at the same time.
Eventually I could hear my parents come back from their night out. Teddy and I climbed out of my bed and went to greet them. We shared our news of becoming a couple. Of course my dad had a few “rules” to let Teddy know about, but for the most part they seemed okay with it.
Wait until I told them I wanted to go on tour with Teddy...
