Chapter 18
After I hung up with Teddy, my cell phone began to ring again. When I saw it wasn’t a number I recognized, I decided to answer anyway.
“Hello?”
“Is this Jessica?”
“Yeah, who’s this?”
“Oh right… this is Andy. What’s up?”
“Oh hey Andy… not much. How about you?”
“Actually, I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me tomorrow night. I thought we could go see a movie if you wanted to.”
“You know what,” I paused, as Teddy suddenly crossed my mind. Why was I thinking about Teddy when another guy was asking me out? “I’d love to. So are you gonna pick me up then?”
“Yeah I’ll call you when I’m leaving my place to come get you. Sound good?”
“Sounds great.”
“Dinner and a movie it is then. Dress accordingly,” he said.
He was just too cute sometimes.
“Oh I will… talk to ya later A squared.”
“Later Jess… later tomorrow that is,” he said with a laugh.
“Yep. Bye.”
“See ya.”
Did I seriously just agree to go on a date with Andy tomorrow night, when Teddy would be at my house all day? Oh well… Teddy’s just a friend. He won’t care who I go out with. After all… he’s got Jade. Maybe we could double date sometime… or maybe not. I laughed to myself. I don’t think I could deal with her for more than thirty seconds. Oh well… I’ll just have to deal with it tomorrow. For now I’m going to bed. Tomorrow’s gonna come soon enough…
The Next Day
I awoke to the sound of banging. I thought it was a dream at first, but then I heard my brother yelling my name.
“Enter,” I said sleepily.
“About time you woke up. You can call Teddy now because I’m all ready to go.”
“Are you kidding me? What is it like six in the morning?”
“Hardly. It’s 9.30… it wouldn’t hurt you to get up and dressed either. But seriously… call him. And just to help you out…” he said as he walked over and pulled open my curtains.
“Gee thanks, I can always count on you, big brother, to ruin a perfectly good snooze,” I said with a smile.
“That’s what I’m here for. Now call him, loser.”
“I’m not gonna call him a loser,” I grinned.
“Man you’re full of comebacks… and only minutes after waking up. I’m impressed. Call him,” he said as he smiled and walked out of my room.
I walked over to the window to see if I could see Teddy in his room… and I couldn’t. I’d just have to hope he’d answer. I picked up my cell phone and dialed his number, still standing in front of the window in my pajamas.
“Ayerplane, I was hoping you’d call.”
“Come on Teddy, you knew I was gonna call.”
“This is true, but I mean I was hoping you’d call soon because I didn’t think I could wait much longer.”
“Oh well, Chris said he’s ready… so whenever you wanna come over is fine.”
“Awesome. I was actually sitting down in the basement waiting for you to call so I would be able to grab my stuff and go.”
“Wow, excited much?”
“Hey, I just can’t wait to… meet your brother,” he said quickly.
“Right… okay so I’m gonna go take a shower and get dressed but Chris will answer the door once you get here. I’ll be snooping around to see what you’re up to later.”
“You’d better not be snooping… or else.”
“Or else what? Hmm?”
“Oh you don’t wanna find out… it could be brutal.”
“Alright. I’m hanging up the phone now… I’ll see you soon.”
“You’d better believe it… okay bye,” he said as we hung up.
It had to have only been a couple minutes later and I heard the doorbell ring. Wow, someone is eager. I hoped they’d get along fine, because I wasn’t coming downstairs looking like I did.
Teddy’s POV
“Hey Teddy, I’m Chris,” Chris said as he opened the door to find Teddy standing with his guitar and a backpack.
“Yeah, Teddy,” I said as we shook hands.
“You wanna come in then?”
“Sure, sounds good to me.”
“So I couldn’t wait to hear this song that you wanted my opinion on. No one’s ever wanted my opinion before, so it’s really cool to have someone look to me for something like that.”
“Awesome. So… can we get started because I really want you to hear this song.”
“And why’s that?”
“Jessica’s not around is she?”
“She’s upstairs in the shower… why?”
“Because I wrote it about her, that’s all. I want it to be perfect… then I was hoping you’d help me slip the CD of it into her room somehow. I just want her to hear it and give me another chance.”
“You’ve got me hooked… now I’ve gotta hear it. Let’s go down to the basement. There’s a killer sound system down there and you can’t hear it upstairs… so it’s perfect for our little jam session,” Chris said with a laugh.
Chris and I proceeded to go downstairs. Jessica must have been still in the process of getting ready, and would probably be for awhile, seeing as I had just heard water start running. I figure she’d just gotten into the shower.
“So bust out the guitar, let’s see what we’ve got.”
“Actually, do you mind if I use a piano? Because I kinda wrote it on the piano, not the guitar,” I questioned.
“Sure thing, but that’s in the living room… that means we’ll have to hurry so Jess doesn’t hear us.”
“Alright, let’s go,” I replied. I hope Jessica doesn’t come down in the middle of the song or it’ll ruin my whole plan.
-------
I was finally finished getting ready, and decided to head downstairs to see what those boys were up to. As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I could hear them talking.
“I don’t know what to say,” I heard Chris state.
“That bad?” Teddy asked.
“No, that good,” Chris replied.
“So is it good enough for me to hear yet?” I asked as I walked into the room.
“Oh hey Jess, and no, not yet…” Teddy replied.
“Hey sis, you wanna chill with us today or what?”
“I can for a little while, then I’ve gotta go get ready again.”
“Why’s that?” Chris asked with a grin.
“Uh, since when do I have to tell you what I’m doing?”
“I’d kinda like to know too,” Teddy said with a smile.
“Oh you would, would you?”
“Yes,” they both said in unison.
“Fine, if you must know, I have a date tonight,” I stated matter-of-factly.
I could see the grin disappear from Teddy’s face. Why would he be upset that I was going out with someone? All he wanted to be with me was friends right?
“And who’s the lucky guy?” Chris asked me, noticing Teddy’s sudden mood change as well.
“His name’s Andy… don’t know if you remember him or not.”
“Oh, you mean Andy as in the guy that’s friends with Zealand’s boyfriend right?”
“Yep, that’s him. And it’s not like we’re dating or anything, it’s just one date… dinner and a movie. Nothing too exciting... What’s wrong Teddy?” I asked, looking at Teddy, who hadn’t said a word since I mentioned the date.
“Oh nothing. I think I just zoned out that’s all… I was just getting a little bored with all this dating talk.”
“Then let’s not talk about it anymore, okay?” I said cheerfully.
“Fine by me. So Chris, do you have any new stuff I can hear?”
With that, everyone relaxed and got comfortable. The rest of the day the three of us played our guitars and listened to each other play various tunes and parts of songs we had written. The time was flying by, and I was having a blast. I had totally forgotten about my date with Andy. Then my cell phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hey Jess, it’s Andy. I’m just about to your house… are you all ready to go then?”
“Oh geez, it is about that time already isn’t it,” I stated, almost sadly.
“Don’t sound so excited,” he said grumpily.
“Who are you kidding? I’m so excited for this. I just lost track of time and I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I’m not ready for a date.”
“Don’t change a thing… I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt as well. It sounds like you’re perfectly ready. I’ll be there in a few minutes then.”
“Okay, I’ll see you soon,” I said as I hung up my phone.
I turned back to the guys and said, “Well guys, it looks like the party’s over… I’ve gotta leave… too bad, I was having so much fun.”
“Hey, just because you’re leaving doesn’t mean the party’s over. Teddy and I can find a ton of things to do while you’re gone. Oh and I’m gonna be the protective older brother and say be safe,” he said with a wink.
“You really are a loser aren’t you?” I said, smiling.
“Always, now get outta here already,” Chris said with a reassuring smile.
“I’m gone. If you’re not here when I get back then I’ll talk to you later Teddy.”
“Alright, have fun on your date,” Teddy replied.
“Later boys.”
I walked towards the door with a million thoughts racing through my mind. Teddy seemed upset that I was going on a date with someone… did that mean he’d finally realized he had feelings for me? Or was it just some sort of protective brother type thing he was feeling? Why do boys have to be so complicated?
Teddy’s POV
Chris and I started talking after Jess had left, and we got into some interesting topics.
“So, it seems you uh… like my sister,” Chris stated with a smile.
“Yeah well… is it that obvious?” I grinned.
“Sadly, yes… I’m surprised she hasn’t seen it yet. Or maybe she has… and she’s just trying to sort though her feelings first. Anyway… you said you already made a CD of the song?”
“Yeah, I did.”
“Well I think it’s perfect the way it is, so let’s go leave it in her room and she’ll see it when she gets home. That’ll be the perfect time to hit her with it. I can already tell she was doing some serious thinking when she left. You can always tell when she’s thinking… it’s usually when she’s at a loss for words, and that rarely happens.”
“So what is that supposed to mean?”
“It just means she’s realized something… it usually happens when she thinks something is one way, and it turns out to be something completely different. She goes through the whole re-evaluating thing and she’ll figure it out soon. Don’t worry… I’m sure Andy’s just a phase. She’s gonna give you a chance, I just know it.”
“I just hope I’m not too late,” I said sadly.
After I hung up with Teddy, my cell phone began to ring again. When I saw it wasn’t a number I recognized, I decided to answer anyway.
