Chapter 17

Saturday came and went, and I didn’t get to talk to Zealand. I was perfectly fine not talking to Teddy, but I just couldn’t wait for Zealand to call me with all the details about her date with Michael… and if she had gotten me a date with Adorable Andy as I like to call him. Actually, I call him A squared, but he doesn’t know that it means Adorable Andy. He thinks it’s because his first and last name begin with the letter A.

I hoped I’d be able to talk to her tomorrow… bright and early. Before I was about to go to bed, my phone began to ring. I looked to see Teddy was calling me. To say the least, I was not excited. He really had to quit calling me at random times… especially when I was about to go to bed and all.

“Hey Teddy.”

“Hey Jess, what’s up?”

“I was about to go to sleep… all these late nights are finally starting to catch up with me.”

“Oh that’s cool. I just wanted to ask you when you wanted to give me that dance you owe me.”

“Honestly, I don’t know. I’ve got plans with people these next couple of days, so I can’t really commit to anything until I know for sure.”

“Okay well, I guess I’ll just have to keep calling you every night until you agree to it,” he said slowly.

“Okay… I’ll remember not to answer my phone when I see it’s you,” I said with a small laugh, trying to hide the fact that I was being totally serious.

“You’d better not… I know where you live ya know,” he said with a chuckle.

“Wow, nothing gets past you huh?”

“Nope. Oh there was something else I wanted to ask you.”

“Alright… what is it?”

“Do you think you could introduce me to your brother? He seems like a really cool guy. I heard him playing his guitar yesterday and I must admit, his skills are mad dope. I thought maybe we could talk since we’re both trying to make it in the business, ya know?”

“Sure… that’s cool, but did you have to ask me that tonight? I mean, it’s pretty late.”

“It is late, you’re right. But I couldn’t wait until tomorrow. Plus I really want to know when you’re gonna hold up to the rest of your end of our little bet.”

“How about I call you tomorrow and let you know, okay? For now I’ve got a date with my pillow and I’m running a little late.”

“Yeah, I should probably be getting that way soon. But most likely it won’t be for awhile. Okay well, I’ll plan on hearing from you tomorrow then.”

“Alright, good night Teddy.”

“Night Ayerplane,” Teddy said before we both hung up.

Teddy’s POV

Today was going to be rough. I could feel it from the moment I woke up this morning. Not only did I have to call Jessica and try to get her to hang out with me again, I was going to break up with Jade.

Before I knew it, Jade was at my house, ringing my doorbell. I walked down to meet her.

“I shouldn’t be gone too long,” I said to my mom as I walked past. She gave me the look… that all knowing look that says ‘I know this is tough for you, but good luck anyways.’ I’m glad she understood how I was feeling. She was probably more than excited that I was going to break up with Jade.

“Hey there,” I said to her as I walked out the door.

“Hey Teddy… so what did you need to talk about?

“Let’s go walk to the park first… okay?”

“Alright… there was something I wanted to ask you though.”

“Ask away, although I’m pretty sure I already know what you’re gonna ask,” I said as we began to walk towards the park.

“Okay… it’s about Friday night. I was sitting out on my front porch and I saw you with another girl in your car. Who was that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen her before and I really hope you weren’t on a date with her. Care to explain?”

“I’m just gonna tell you what it was, because I don’t feel like I need to explain everything I do to you… alright?”

“Fine…”

“So here’s the deal… you should know who she is.”

“And why should I?”

“Oh only because you’ve gone to school with her for the past three years. Her name is Jessica.”

“Oh, you mean that weirdo that lives next door to you?”

“Yeah my neighbor, but she’s not a weirdo… she’s really cool once you get to know her.”

“So were you on a date with her or something? Because it was a Friday night and you looked like you were kinda dressed up.”

“It wasn’t really a date. She owed me ice cream and we decided to go on Friday to get it… that’s all.”

“You were smiling when I saw you… you looked like you were really having a great time with her. You never smile like that when we’re together anymore… wait a minute… oh my gosh I’m so dumb.”

“What?”

“I should’ve seen it before. You like her don’t you? You must like her because we haven’t been going out much lately, and it seems like you’d rather spend your time with her than with me.”

“Well… I’m not sure if I like her that way…” The whole time I was thinking to myself ‘of course I like her, she’s amazing’ but I couldn’t say that to Jade. I continued, “I might, but right now we’re just friends, and that’s it. If something happens later on, I wouldn’t be opposed to it… but right now I don’t think she feels that way about me.”

“Oh everyone knows she’s like totally obsessed with you.”

“Seriously? She doesn’t seem like it to me.”

“Because she’s trying to be normal when she’s around you, duh!”

“That’s not what she’s like at all. She doesn’t try to impress anyone, especially not me. Why would you think she’d act differently around me when everyone knows she has that ‘I don’t care what anyone thinks’ attitude?”

“So you’re defending her now?”

“Well, I’m just calling it like I see it. Which brings me to the reason I asked you to come out here.”

“You may think I’m dumb Teddy, but I know why you brought me out here. And just so you know, I was going to break up with you too. This just isn’t working for me anymore. I want someone who is the total package… and that just isn’t you anymore.”

“Wow, that was harsh… but I hope you can understand where I’m coming from. We just don’t have anything in common and it’s hard to build a relationship between two people who are into totally different things.”

“Yeah whatever. Just remember that I’m the one who broke up with you first… and I hope you and what’s her face are happy together… because Corey and I are sure going to be.”

“You and Corey? What’s up with that?”

“Yeah well, I should have told you sooner, but the reason I didn’t want to hang out with you on Friday was because I went to the movies with Corey.”

“So you’ve never been fully in this relationship… ever?”

“Nah, but it was fun wasn’t it?”

“Yeah, sure… whatever.”

“Well, I don’t really feel like walking around anymore. My feet are starting to hurt.”

“Let’s walk back to my house and then you can leave from there. Sound good?”

“Fine by me. Let’s go.”


When I got back up to my room, I realized how free I finally felt. I hadn’t felt this carefree in a long time… and I was loving it. Now all I had to do was call Jessica and try to find an excuse to go over to her house long enough to leave the CD I made. Here goes nothing…


No answer. Are you kidding me? I thought she was joking about screening my calls. Well, I guess I’ll just have to keep trying. I walked over to my window to see if I could see her in her room… and she was. She was lying in bed reading a book. I know this sounds cliché, but she looked so pretty just sitting there in her pajamas. Wow, I never realized until this moment that I do have a serious crush on her… but I can’t think like that because I know she doesn’t feel that way towards me.

I had called her eight times now, and she still wasn’t answering. I didn’t even see her flinch when I called. I decided to just keep watching her to see if she’d even move. I wasn’t giving up… that’s for sure.

I was on my tenth call, and was finally about to surrender, when I saw her brother, Chris, walking into her room. Oh geez, he’s handing her a cell phone. It must not have been in her room. Maybe now she would answer.

“Hi Teddy,” she said when she finally answered.

“Hey there Ayerplane. So how’s it going?”

“Fine… I’m just reading. So you called ten times huh? Something must be bothering you that you need to talk about if it’s worth ten missed calls. My brother said that he couldn’t take it anymore and brought my phone up here… since I left it in the living room earlier this evening.”

“Yeah… I’ve got some important stuff to tell you. But why I really called is that I really want to uh… talk to your brother. I wrote a new song and wanted his opinion.”

“Oh, so my opinion isn’t good enough anymore? Geez, I see how I rate.”

“Nah, your opinion still matters… it’s just… I want it to be perfect before you hear it.”

“Okay… well let me ask him… hold on.”

“Holding…” I said with a chuckle.

“CHRIS!” I heard her shout.

“What?” he shouted back.

“Are you doing anything tomorrow?”

“Nothing too important… why?”

“Teddy wants to talk to you about the whole music thing. Something about your opinion of something he just wrote. What should I tell him?”

“Oh sure. I’m game… tell him to come over whenever. How about I just have you call him when I’m up and dressed and such?”

“Okay, I’ll tell him…. Teddy, are you still there?”

“Yep… and just so you know… I heard every word of that quiet little convo you just had,” I said, laughing.

“So does it sound okay with you?” she laughed.

“Yep… just call me whenever he’s ready for me to come over… But I’m gonna let you get back to your book because it looked like you were really enjoying it.”

“Being a creeper again I see,” Jessica said as she waved to me through her window.

“You know it,” I laughed as I waved back. “Alright, well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Alright… bye Teddy.”

“Bye Ayerplane.”

I hung up my cell phone. My job was done… until tomorrow. This was gonna be good… I just knew it.
