Chapter 31
Teddy had already been here for awhile and he still hadn’t come up to see me. I figured he and Chris ended up talking, since they’re getting to be quite close friends. They mostly talk about music, but did you really expect them to talk about much else?
I figured it might be a little bit until Teddy would come up to my room, so I went back to what I had started right after I finished getting ready… my guitar.
I had been trying to figure out how to play ‘Our Eyes’ and I almost had it all figured out. I love that I can listen to a song and figure out how to play it without needing to read music. I could, but I was usually too lazy to try and read it.
I started from the beginning and began to sing,
“You seem so afraid Afraid you’ll regret Regret getting closer And connected, to me And I feel like that too But I'm scared Scared you'll leave while you still feel you can”
Suddenly my door burst open to reveal Teddy. He spread his arms out and sang,
“I’ll just wait and see So I’ll just wait and see, and see yeah.”
I smiled as I put down my guitar and met him halfway into my room with a hug.
“Whoever wrote that song… props to them,” he said with a grin.
“I know… he just might make it big someday…… maybe,” I smiled.
“Whatever, he’s already famous… you just don’t know it yet,” he laughed.
“Okay… he’s already famous. So, you ready for some food? I’m starving.”
“Sure… but I’m not all that hungry…”
“Too bad… you said you wanted breakfast with me and that’s exactly what you’re getting,” I laughed.
“Oh fine… let’s go,” he said as he grabbed my hand and we headed downstairs.
---
As we sat there enjoying our bowls of cereal, I stopped and looked at Teddy and he gave me the ‘what’ look.
“I was thinking…” I started.
“About…” he added.
“What do you wanna do today? Because I was thinking we could sit on the back porch and try to write a new song or something. I’m feeling strangely inspired today,” I smiled.
“Fine by me. We must’ve been thinking the same thing because it just so happens that I brought my guitar with me today.”
“No joke? Awesome.”
“Yeah, there’s been no lack of inspiration on my end,” he smiled. “So are you about done with that cereal so we can get down to business?”
“I suppose… let’s head out there then. I can’t wait to get started.”
“Don’t you think you’ll need something like… oh I don’t know… your guitar maybe?” he said with a smirk.
“Nah, I was planning on pretending,” I laughed.
“You’re never gonna admit when I’m right are you?”
“Never,” I said grinning. “But, I should to go get it though… it would probably help.”
“Yeah, so you go get it and I’ll head out to the porch already and wait for you there. Sound good?”
“Sounds great,” I said, putting our dirty bowls into the sink.
I ran upstairs to get my guitar while Teddy went to the porch. I could hear him already playing when I walked up.
“Starting without me I see,” I said with a mock frown.
“Yeah, you take too long,” he laughed. “Come over here, you big pain.”
“Excuse me? Big pain? If I remember correctly, you’re the one who knows exactly how to push my buttons…”
Just then, Chris walked into the room.
“I heard someone playing the guitar and I thought maybe I could get in on some writing action,” he laughed. “What are you talking about Teddy being a pain?”
“Exactly what I said… but he called me a pain first,” I pouted.
“I did… it’s true,” Teddy laughed. “But she’s the cutest pain you’ll ever meet.”
“Yeah, I agree… with the pain part,” Chris laughed.
“So, what are we gonna play?” I asked, blatantly changing the subject.
“Well,” Chris chuckled. “Since someone is trying to cover up her realization that she’s a pain… I did write something recently… you guys wanna hear it?”
“Absolutely,” Teddy said excitedly. “I always wanna hear your new stuff.”
“And you Jess?” Chris asked.
“Yeah Ayerplane, what about you?”
“Sure,” I sighed. “You know I can’t resist your music,” I finished with a small smile.
“There’s that smile we all love,” Chris said and Teddy nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, yeah. Enough already… on with the song… you know the drill,” I added.
“Okay,” Chris started. “So I was just sitting thinking about the future and it just kinda came out… there’s not much more to it than that.”
“Okay, sounds good, let’s hear it,” Teddy said, smiling.
“Alrighty, here goes,” he started picking his guitar and then began to sing.
“It’s some kinda fate you’re waiting for Sooner or later it’s at your door And it’s not what you expected There’s expectations to factor in So many voices on the wind Drowning out the one within
We’ll make some space for bravery Don’t worry ‘bout the dangers that you see All around, on all sides Cuz it’s our time, not a long time ‘Follow the leader,’ don’t need it, won’t make it right The story’s yours to write
There’s things that I want, and things that I need And then there’s the pressure to succeed Crowding out what I believe I knew why I sang all this before Sometimes I feel like I don’t anymore Then I find the part that’s pure
We’ll make some space for bravery Don’t worry ‘bout the dangers that you see All around, on all sides Cuz it’s our time, not a long time ‘Follow the leader,’ don’t need it, won’t make it right The story’s yours to write
Let’s take a moment to affirm Whatever happens, we’ll live and we’ll learn Stay connected at every turn Cuz we’re all in this together now
Make some space for bravery Don’t worry ‘bout the dangers that you see All around, on all sides Cuz it’s our time, not a long time ‘Follow the leader,’ don’t need it, won’t make it right
The story’s ours to write And we will So let’s go The story is ours to write”
Teddy and I looked at each other, and we were both thinking the same thing. We immediately stood up and gave Chris a standing ovation.
“Amazing,” I shouted.
“Superb,” Teddy added in a funny accent.
“Aww, thanks guys. You’re too nice,” Chris gushed.
Suddenly I looked outside and noticed it had begun to sprinkle.
“Is that rain I see?” I said with a grin.
“Oh no, don’t get her started,” Chris said. “There’s no turning back now.”
“What are you talking about?” Teddy asked, confused.
“Oh, just watch,” Chris laughed.
I was grinning from ear to ear as I grabbed my sandals and ran outside.
