Chapter 29
“Mom!” Teddy yelled from our spot at the bottom of the stairs.
“I’m in the living room!” she yelled back.
As we walked in, I realized she wasn’t alone. His dad was sitting with her. They we watching television… all of the sudden I lost the ability to talk. I just matched her smile as we stood in front of them.
“What can we do for you two fine individuals on this lovely evening?” his mom asked both of us.
Teddy began, “Hey, is it okay if Jess stays for awhile longer while we watch a movie? She said she hasn’t seen the one I just bought so I told her we could watch it together.”
“I don’t know, it’s kinda late to be hanging out with friends,” she started.
“Mom, come on… it’s not like we’re going out of the house… we’ll be in my room… unless we can watch it down here?”
“You can watch it down here, we were going to start getting ready for bed anyway… we have to work tomorrow you know,” she smiled.
“Okay, cool. Oh and by the way, Jess is going to be coming over more often than usual… just thought I should let you know.”
“And why is that?” she said questioningly. “Not that I care, I’m just wondering…”
“Well, because she’s my girlfriend now,” he said, smiling.
I waited for her reaction… and a grin spread across her face.
“Is this true?” she directed towards me.
I nodded with a smile, as I still hadn’t found my voice yet.
She stood up, and I didn’t know what to think… then she wrapped us both into a hug.
“I’m so glad this finally happened. Just between us… I’ve wanted this to happen since we moved in next door to your family ten years ago,” she smiled.
“Mom, stop it already, geez.”
“Well, it’s true,” she turned to me. “After ten years of telling him to introduce himself to the girl next door… talk to the girl next door… get to know that nice girl next door… he’s finally listened to me,” she laughed.
“So you’re not mad?” I managed to say quietly.
“Of course not… I’m happy,” she said. “Come on John, let’s go upstairs and give these two some privacy… I know you don’t want to watch a movie with us sitting down here.”
“Thanks Mom,” Teddy said as he rolled his eyes.
“Just make sure you’re not here too late,” she said warningly. “I trust you two, but I don’t want any funny business going on,” she added.
“I’ll be gone once the movie’s over,” I said reassuringly.
“Okay, be good… and I’ll see you soon,” she said to us as she walked up the stairs.
“Well that didn’t go how I expected it to,” I said to Teddy as we sat down on the couch and started the movie.
“Why? What did you expect?”
“Well, at first I was worried… then you made me feel fine about it… but I didn’t expect her to be as happy as she was.”
“But you’re glad she is, right?”
“Of course,” I smiled.
“Good… now she’ll stop nagging me about asking you out,” he laughed.
I turned to him with a glare. “So you only asked me out so your mom would stop nagging you?” I asked, sounding hurt.
“I was kidding, geez. Chill out babe.”
“I don’t know if I believe you,” I said.
“Well you should, I didn’t know she felt that way… just that she always wanted me to introduce myself to you and get to know you. She never said anything about dating you… that was all my idea,” he grinned.
“It was a pretty good idea,” I said, smiling as he wrapped his arm around me and we got comfortable on the couch.
The movie started as he whispered, “I sure thought so,” and kissed my cheek.
Tonight was perfect… well, as perfect as my crazy life could be. I had the perfect guy for me and that’s all there was to it. Tonight was a night to remember… and I would definitely never forget it.
It seemed like only a few minutes later and the movie was over. The time went by way too fast and I started to get up to head home… it was already 1 am and I was getting tired.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked playfully.
“Well, the movie’s over… I was gonna go home.”
“Get back here… can’t we just sit here for a little bit?”
“I was hoping you’d say that, but I didn’t figure you’d want to,” I said, settling back in between his outstretched arms.
“Now why would you think that?” he asked, kissing my forehead.
“Well let’s see… maybe it’s because I didn’t think you liked to show affection… but I guess that’s only when other people are around, right?”
“Hey now, let’s not bring up the past… I’m not gonna act like that anymore, and I thought after tonight you would realize that.”
“I do… it’s just gonna take me a little time to come to terms with it. Don’t get me wrong… I’m excited… but I’m not used to it, so don’t get upset if I’m wary of it at first.”
“Well you shouldn’t be… but since it’s my fault, I’ll be understanding. Just know that it’s gonna be coming a lot… I’m not self conscious about my feelings anymore and I want the whole world to know that you’re mine,” he smiled, pulling me in closer.
“Teddy,” I said looking into his eyes.
“Ayerplane,” he smiled back.
“It’s already 1.30, and your mom said…” I started.
I couldn’t finish my sentence because Teddy started to kiss me. Not that I minded, but I really should be heading home. After a couple minutes of us basically making out, I realized where we were… and who was upstairs.
“Teddy, your parents are like, right up there,” I said pointing in the direction of the stairs.
“So?”
“So we can’t do this now… as much as I like kissing you… I really should be making my way back home.”
“I know… I was just hoping I could convince you to stay longer with a little kiss… and it seems to have worked, but only for five minutes,” he said with a mock frown.
“Aww, I’ll make it up to you later,” I smiled. “So I’ll see you tomorrow then?”
“Well I should hope I’ll see you later today,” he said getting up along with me.
“Oh right, I forgot that tomorrow has so quickly become today,” I said as he wrapped his arm around my waist and walked me to the door.
“It looks kinda cold out there, are you sure you’ll be okay?”
“Uh, let’s go out on the front porch and I’ll see if I can survive the long journey home,” I laughed.
“Okay, let’s go.”
As we walked out onto the front porch, I shivered as I realized how chilly it had actually gotten. My tank top was not going to give me much warmth on the walk over, not that it was a long walk, but still.
“Alright, wait here, I’ll be right back,” he said, racing back inside.
I didn’t know why he went back inside, but I figured it was because he saw me shiver and thought he could come to my rescue. He wasn’t gone for more than a minute, and when he returned, he had a hoodie in his hands.
“Here, wear this. I don’t want you to be cold… even if it’s not a very long walk.”
“Aww, thanks so much Tedster,” I said, hugging him.
“Man, you really are cold, put it on already, geez.”
“Yes mother,” I laughed as I put it on. I instantly noticed that it smelled like him, and that made my smile even bigger.
“What?” he asked with a questioning smile.
“Oh nothing… I’ll see you later today. Call me if you want to do something… or just call me… or come see me. You know, whatever you feel like.”
“Oh trust me, I will,” he said, pulling me close for one last kiss before I left.
“Alright, I really have to go,” I said, slowly backing away. I didn’t want to turn around, because I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
“Okay, but be careful on those steps, you can turn around to go down them, I promise I won’t leave,” he smiled.
I turned around, but only long enough to walk down the stairs, then I instantly turned back around and watched him as I walked away. As I got to my front porch, I wrapped my arms around myself and breathed in. I looked over towards his porch, and he was still there. I waved to him one last time and then walked inside.
