Chapter 36
I woke late this morning… noon to be exact. I hadn’t fallen asleep until almost three in the morning because of all the thoughts running through my head. Should I forgive Teddy for what happened? I’m not going to automatically forgive him and assume he had no part in any of it… even if that’s what I’d prefer to do. I want to believe he only ran into her like Chris suggested… but I don’t know. Of course I want to know the situation, but should I just give in and go talk to him about it?
The only thing I know is I want to talk to my brother… he’ll help me see things clearly. I threw on a pair of jean shorts and a t-shirt and ran out of my room.
“CHRIS!” I yelled when I got downstairs.
“JESSICA, COME INTO THE KITCHEN,” my mom yelled back.
“Hey mom, where’s Chris?”
“I thought he would have told you where he was going today.”
“Nope, he sure didn’t. Why? Where did he go?”
“Well, he went over to Teddy’s house about an hour ago.”
“WHAT? What’s he doing over there?”
“He said something about needing to talk to Teddy and I think he mentioned recording a song he’d written.”
“I can’t believe he’s doing this.”
“Why? What happened with you and Teddy? I thought you two were really close.”
“Yeah, ‘were’ is the key word there. Right now… I’m not too sure what we are. I guess I really need to talk to him.”
“No time like the present I guess.”
“Right… I’ll just go over there right now then… get the answers I need.”
“Maybe you should call first.”
“Not gonna happen… I need answers now. Plus, the Geiger’s don’t care if I come over.”
“Alright… and whatever is bothering you… I’m sure it’ll all turn out fine in the end, dear.”
“Thanks Mom. I’m sure it will. I’m gonna head over there now then.”
“Okay, good luck Jess.”
Teddy’s POV
It was almost eleven, and about time for Chris to come over. I was a little anxious, because I know he’ll want to protect his little sister at all costs, and if he even thought that I was purposely trying to hurt her, I was in serious trouble.
But Chris is an understanding guy, so I figure since he knows the whole situation, he won’t be as harsh and maybe he’ll try and help me get through to her.
My thoughts were interrupted yet again, but this time it was only the doorbell. Chris was finally here. I walked over to answer the door.
“Hey Ted,” Chris said as I opened the door.
“Hey Chris, so I can’t wait to hear this song,” I said as I moved out of the way and gestured for him to come inside.
“Yeah, well I hope you’ll like it… because that would be a good indicator of what everyone else thinks. I know my sister likes it, but she’s kinda prejudiced ya know?” he laughed.
“Yeah, I’ll try to keep it strictly business… keep my tiny bit of prejudice out of it… like I’ve never met you before or heard any of your other songs,” I laughed too.
“Hey, whatever works,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Let’s head down to the studio then,” I added.
“Sounds good to me. I’ll follow you,” Chris stated, motioning with his guitar.
We went downstairs and Chris started getting ready to record his song.
“So what’s this song called anyway?” I asked.
“It’s called Shadows Pt. 1 & 2,” he replied.
“Alright… well, whenever you’re ready just go ahead and start.”
“No time like the present to get down to business huh?” he laughed. “Alright… here goes.”
He began to play and I must say I liked the melody. Even though it was really quiet and kinda slow, it was still good. Halfway through the song he completely changed gears and started playing loudly and with lots of emotion. I hadn’t understood the reason for calling it two different parts until now… and I agree that it was a very good idea to call it that. The song just wouldn’t be the same if he’d only used one part over the other.
When he finished I honestly didn’t know what to say. It was amazing.
“So now I finally understand why you called it parts one and two,” I said when he ended.
“Yeah, but I can’t take credit for that. It was Ms. Liz’s idea.”
“Ms. Liz?”
“Oh sorry, Jessica… your girlfriend… my little sister’s idea. She’s quite smart sometimes,” he laughed.
“Why did you call her Ms. Liz?” I questioned. I probably had the most puzzled look on my face because he chuckled before he answered.
“Long story… but basically I used to write songs about her sometimes and I didn’t want my friends to know that they were about the close relationship I have with my little sister, because they wouldn’t understand. So I just started calling her Ms. Liz to cover my tracks. Her middle name is Elizabeth… not sure if you knew that. So Ms. Liz is my codename for her, using her middle name rather than her first, because most people don’t know her middle name.”
“I see… it all makes sense now,” I laughed.
“I forgot that no one else has ever heard me call her that besides my friends back at school. I don’t think she even knows I call her that.”
“Oh… I see. Well that’s cool. Speaking of her… do you think you could help me figure out a way to get her to talk to me? Because I don’t know how to get her to give me a chance.”
“I’m sure she’ll come around sooner or later… but do you wanna play the song you wrote for her then? Because I’d sure like to hear it.”
“Yeah… but only if you give me some ideas when I’m finished.”
“It’s a deal… so go for it.”
I sat down and began to play. I could only hope he’d be able to tell me whether or not she’d like it.
Jessica’s POV
It was 12.15 and I found myself walking up the front steps of the Geiger’s house. I never thought I’d be the one trying to talk to him, but I needed answers, and I needed them now.
I knocked on the door and Teddy’s little brother AJ answered the door.
“Hi Jessica, how are you?”
“I’m fine AJ, how about yourself?”
“I’m good. Teddy’s in the basement with your brother. I figure that’s who you came to see.”
“Oh, thanks… but you know it’s always nice to see you too,” I smiled.
“Right. I like seeing you around here too. My brother’s always in a good mood when you’re around… and that means he doesn’t pick on me as much,” he laughed.
“I guess that’s a good thing then,” I added. “Well, I’m gonna go downstairs then if that’s alright,” I gestured to the basement stairs.
“Yeah sure,” he said, closing the door behind me.
I made my way down the basement stairs and I could hear the boys talking. I wonder what they’re finding to talk about… hopefully not me, because that’d be embarrassing.
I got to the bottom of the stairs and saw them… but they didn’t see me. They had their backs to the stairs. I walked closer to them and they still didn’t notice I’d come in.
Alright, here goes nothing…
“Ahem,” I cleared my throat loudly.
That got their attention.
