Chapter 23

As we pulled into the parking lot, I was starting to calm down a little. I was still incredibly nervous for tonight, but I was ready to start putting myself out there in hopes of being noticed by someone. Maybe I could get a record deal like Teddy had… hopefully that would come very soon, but I should stop thinking about that. Tonight is just about having fun… and that’s what I’m going to do.

Andy and I walked in with our arms around each other, but there was nothing more than friendship between us, and I was perfectly fine with that. He said he didn’t want me to feel left out when Zealand and Michael were all over each other, and I was perfectly fine with that. I was glad he cared enough about me that he didn’t want me to feel bad.

“You’re gonna do great tonight, I just know it,” Andy said reassuringly.

“I sure hope so… right now I just wanna get it over with and enjoy hearing everyone else play. I only hope I can remember everything tomorrow. I don’t want it to be like one of those traumatic experiences that you block out, ya know?”

“Yeah, the first time I played in front of other people is something I don’t think I’d want to remember if I could. I’m glad to just be able to block out something that made me that nervous.”

“I guess I’m weird like that then,” I said with a smile.

We got inside and sat down at our table, which was quite close to the stage. Zealand must have asked for a close table so she could say she was front row for my first performance. We got our drinks and then started watching the other artists perform their songs.

There was quite the variety of music being performed, but almost all of it was acoustic… my favorite way to hear a song. I loved the stripped down sound a song had when it’s only played with a guitar or a piano. I hadn’t realized it before, but there were so many talented people from our town. I didn’t want to be lost among everyone else… and I hoped my music stood out from everyone else’s.

With each performance, I got more and more nervous. Finally after an hour of sitting and listening, it was time for me to go up.

“Alright everyone, next up we have Jessica Ayer,” the sound guy said over the speaker system.

I walked up to the stage with my guitar in hand. All my nervousness began to melt away as I sat down on the stool and began to speak into the microphone.

“Hey everyone… I just want to thank you all for coming out tonight and supporting local artists like myself. I hope you’re all having a good time… so the song I’m gonna be playing tonight is a cover of a Young Love song. It’s quite stripped down as compared to how it is recorded and performed, but I’d like to think this one has my own twist to it. I want to dedicate it to a close friend of mine who isn’t here tonight, but he knows how I feel about him. The song’s called ‘Closer To You,’ and I hope you all like it,” I said as I began to strum out a melody that was similar to the original song. I hoped I didn’t mess up as I began to sing.

As I ended the song, all my friends in the front stood up and began applauding. I couldn’t help but smile when I realized I had just played a nearly perfect song. I’d had a couple finger slips, but nothing major enough to be noticed by anyone but myself.

“Thanks everyone,” I said as I walked off the stage and back to my seat with Zealand, Michael, and Andy. I was feeling two floors high and no one could bring my mood down. I’ll have to do this more often, I thought to myself.

They began to set up a keyboard for whoever was going to be playing after me. I was just getting comfortable in my seat when the announcer came over the speakers again.

“Let’s have a round of applause for everyone who’s performed so far tonight,” he said as everyone, including myself, began to clap loudly. “Alright, we’ve got one more performer for you tonight. Everybody give it up for Teddy Geiger!”

Did he just say what I think he said? Teddy’s performing here? I didn’t know what to think as I saw Teddy walk onto the stage and smile at me… and I was definitely not prepared for what happened next.

Chapter 24

“Hi everyone… so I’m glad you all came out tonight, like Jessica just said, to support local artists,” he said, pointing in my direction. “So the song I’m gonna sing for you guys tonight is one that I wrote myself, and I’d like to dedicate it to Jessica, because it’s written about her and I really wanted her to know that. It basically sums up my feelings, because I was always better at expressing my feelings through songs… so my lovely Ayerplane, this one’s for you," he winked. "It’s called ‘Do You Even Care,’ so here we go…”

He was sitting in front of the keyboard, and as he started to play, he locked eyes with me and began to sing.

Everyone burst out in the loudest applause I’d heard all night. He hadn’t looked away from me the entire song, and I couldn’t believe it. When he said I should be prepared to be stunned, I never imagined this is what he meant. I was beyond stunned. And he wrote it about me?

Of course I cared… I always had, and now I know that he did too. The song described our relationship perfectly, and that’s all there was to it. It was always one sided, or so each of us thought. It just felt good to know that he wasn’t ashamed of how he was feeling anymore.

Wait a minute… if he was finally putting himself and his feelings out there for everyone to see, did that mean he was ready for a relationship with me? It sure happened quicker than I thought it would.

Just as I was getting lost in my thoughts, a voice over the speakers brought me back to reality. “Can I have everyone’s attention please… we’re getting ready to close up now so we need everyone to start making their way out… thanks to everyone for coming out tonight, and we hope you all have a nice evening… what’s left of it that is… so until next time everyone…”

I slowly got up... I needed to talk to Teddy. I looked around the room for him, but I didn’t see him. Where is he? He can’t just do something like that and then leave without saying anything to me.

“Zealand, where’s Teddy?”

“What? You mean he didn’t come and talk to you?” she said stunned, while looking away from me and winking at Michael and Andy.

“Did you just wink at them?”

“No… of course not,” she smiled.

“Do you know something I don’t? If you do you’d better explain,” I said. “You know I hate not knowing something… tell me,” I whined.

“You’ll just have to find out for yourself. Right now I think you should look for Teddy.”

“That’s just it… he’s not here.”

“Seriously?”

“I’m not joking. He’s gone.”

I was looking around the room during the entire conversation between Zealand and I. Teddy was really gone. How could he just leave like that? I slowly accepted defeat and walked to the car with Zealand and the boys. Tonight was definitely not going the way I expected… and Teddy leaving was just another twist in the fate of the night. We slowly drove home as I stared out the window with tears forming in my eyes.
