Chapter 9
It was the morning after Landon’s birth, April 24th…8:30 AM to be exact. I had been up for about thirty minutes and called the nurses in to see if they could bring Landon back down to my room before Teddy got here. Teddy had called me around eight to check on me, which happened to be when I woke up. He said his flight had just landed which meant he would be at the hospital at any minute.
“Are you ready Landon? Your daddy is fixing to be here. Aren’t you excited to meet and see him for the first time?” I said to Landon as I walked around my hospital room with her in my arms, waiting on Teddy to knock on the door.
Before I could say anything else there came a knock at the door.
“I think it’s him,” I whispered to Landon as I kissed her forehead and headed towards the door to let Teddy in.
I opened the door and sure enough there stood Teddy. He smiled at me and proceeded to give me a hug. Having him here made a tear roll down the side of my face. This was something I had been wishing for since I first met Teddy. My dreams were finally coming true.
“Can…can…” Teddy stuttered but wasn’t able to get anything out of his mouth.
“You can hold her, but I’d recommend that you sit down first. You seem a little nervous,” I said as I shut the door and watched Teddy walk over to the chair that was next to the hospital bed.
“Okay…I’m ready,” Teddy said as he got situated in the chair.
“Here you are,” I said as I carefully handed Landon over to Teddy. “Here is your beautiful little Landon Kate Geiger.”
“It sounds so weird to hear my last name at the end of her name, but I know it is right. I know it belongs there. As weird as it may sound, it feels so right. And you are right…she is beautiful, just like you.”
“I don’t look so beautiful now. They made me wash all the makeup off of my face. I wanted to slap each and every one of them that told me to wash it off.”
Teddy just laughed. As he laughed, Landon started to cry.
“Maybe you should try singing to her?” I said as Teddy started to rock Landon.
“I’m not good with singing lullabies. Those aren’t typically on my set list for shows. Do you have any other ideas of a song?”
“What about the song ‘I Loved Her First’ by Heartland? It’s a good father-daughter song.”
“That might work,” Teddy said as he stood up and started walking around the room with Landon Kate.
-When It Comes-
Teddy attempted to calm Landon down before resorting to singing to her. It wasn’t working, so he had to start singing.
“Look at the two of you dancing that way, lost in the moment in each others’ face. So much in love your alone in this place…like there’s nobody else in the world. I was enough for her not long ago. I was her number one; she told me so. And she still means the world to me just so you know. So be careful when you hold my girl,” he started.
“Keep going…you’re doing great,” I smiled.
“Time changes everything, life must go on, and I’m not gonna stand in your way. I loved her first. I held her first. And a place in my heart will always be hers. From the first breath she breathed, when she first smiled at me, I knew the love of a father runs deep. And I’d pray that she find you someday, but it’s still hard to give her away. I loved her first.”
Hearing Teddy sing this song to Landon brought a tear to my eye.
“How could that beautiful woman with you be the same freckle-face kid that I knew, the one that I read all those fairy tales to, and tucked into bed all those nights? And I knew the first time I saw you with here, it was only a matter of time. I loved her first. I held her first. And a place in my heart will always be hers. From the first breath she breathed, when she first smiled at me, I knew the love of a father runs deep. And I prayed that she’d find you someday, but it’s still hard to give her away. I loved her first.”
I think I was now crying more than Landon was earlier.
“From the first breath she breathed, when she first smiled at me, I knew the love of a father runs deep. Someday you might know what I’m going through, when a miracle smiles up at you. I loved her first,” Teddy finished as he kissed Landon’s forehead.
-When It Comes-
It was four in the afternoon, and I was now on my way home. Teddy was driving Landon and me home. The day was going amazing.
“You are going to love her room. It’s really cute,” I said as Teddy turned onto the street we both lived on.
“Really, what exactly does it look like again?” Teddy asked as we drove past his house.
“It’s pink…all pink. The bedding is pink in the gingham pattern. Her crib is white and so is everything else in the room.”
“Cool.”
“It may not sound pretty to you, since you are a guy or whatever…but I promise it looks like the perfect room for Landon.”
“I trust you with whatever it looks like,” Teddy said as he pulled up into my driveway.
“I sure hope you trust me or else we’re both in a world of trouble,” I said as I looked down at Landon Kate and smiled. “She looks so cute when she’s sleeping.”
“Like you?”
“I wouldn’t classify myself as looking cute when I sleep.”
“Well, you do look cute sleeping…but you look cute all the time.”
“And so do you,” I laughed as Teddy got out of the car and opened the door that I was seated right next to. “Thank you very much.”
“Would you like for me to get her and carry her inside the house?”
“That would be great…but only if you want to.”
“I don’t mind at all.”
“Okay then,” I said with a smile as I stepped aside and watched Teddy lean in the car and unfasten Landon’s car seat.
-When It Comes- -Alyssa’s POV-
“Here they come!” I said to Jamie as I continued to look out the window and watch Kourtni and Teddy head up the driveway towards the front door.
“I cannot wait to see little Landon again. She has to be the cutest little thing…ever,” Jamie said.
“I know. She is so adorable. It’s hard to believe that we are aunts Jamie. What do you think about that?”
“No…it’s hard to believe that we are godmothers. I never thought something that awesome would happen to me.”
“Well, it did…” I said as I heard the door knob turn.
-When It Comes-
“SURPRISE,” Jamie and Alyssa said in a low screaming voice as Teddy and I walked in with Landon.
“It’s my two best friends in the whole wide world,” I said as Jamie, Alyssa, and I had a group hug. “You’ve already met little Landon…briefly, and I’m sure you know Teddy.”
“Nope…don’t think we know him,” Alyssa joked. “I’m just kidding Ted. It’s nice to see you for the first time in ages,” Alyssa said as she hugged Teddy.
“Could the two of you watch Landon for a few minutes, please? There’s something I need to talk to Kourtni about,” Teddy said as he sat Landon’s car seat on the ground.
“Sure…no problem,” Alyssa and Jamie said in unison as I followed Teddy towards the back porch.
-When It Comes-
“What do we have to talk about?” I questioned as Teddy and I stepped outside onto my back porch.
“My mom confronted me about something this morning,” Teddy replied.
“And…are you going to tell me what it is?”
“She said I cannot keep doing this flying back and forth every other weekend. There’s no way we would be able to pay for any of it and get things for Landon too.”
“Okay?”
“She said if I kept doing this then I’d have to move down here permanently and quit the music business.”
“No, you couldn’t possibly do that. I wouldn’t make you. I guess this means that we are going to have to break up and that you won’t see Landon for a long time.”
“Not technically, there’s an alternative.”
“And what’s the alternative?”
“The alternative is that Landon, you, and me get a house together right down the road from my house in Rochester.”
“I don’t know if I can do that. I cannot just pack up my things, move to New York, and leave my family behind…but then again I don’t want you to leave me,” I said as I felt the tear roll down the side of my face.
“I wouldn’t ever leave you…don’t worry,” Teddy sighed as he hugged me and kissed my forehead.

Chapter 10
It was one day away from being four months since I had last seen Teddy. The last time I had seen him was the day after Landon was born, April 24th…since Landon was born on the 23rd. I hadn’t really spoken to him since he left me with that big decision to make.
Today was August 23rd; Landon was four months old today. Today was also the day that Teddy was coming back to the capital city, Montgomery, for a concert at the mall. I decided to pack Landon a bag and make a road trip to the concert without letting Teddy know we were coming. The two of us needed to talk about what we discussed back before he left.
“Well Landon…are you ready to see your daddy? You’ve grown a lot since he has last seen you,” I said as I buckled little Landon into her car seat in my Pilot.
Landon just yawned. I had woken her up from her nap, but I had to if we wanted to get to the concert on time.
“You can sleep on the way my angel,” I said as I kissed her forehead then shut the passenger door and proceeded to get in the driver’s seat.
Right as I cranked the car up, my cell phone started ringing. I dug it out of my purse, looked at the caller ID and saw it was Teddy calling. I had better take this call.
“Hello,” I said as I put the car in reverse and began to slowly back out of the driveway.
“Stranger…how are you and Landon?” Teddy asked as Landon started to cry. “Where are you going? I can hear the car moving.”
“We are doing fine. And I’m just taking Landon for a checkup.”
“Oh,” Teddy sighed.
“You sound upset. What is it?”
“I was just hoping the two of you would make it to my show.”
“Oh yeah, we were planning on it but I had forgotten about Landon’s check-up. I’m really sorry Ted. We wanted to be there and support our favorite guy, but there just isn’t any way possible. By the time we get out of the doctor’s office the show will probably be over.”
“It’s going to take that long?”
“Well, yeah, and we’re leaving early because I have to run a few errands in town. Like I have to get some more formula and stuff.”
“Oh,” Teddy sighed on the other end of the phone.
“I really am sorry Ted. You don’t know how much we wanted to be there today, really. I was seriously planning on coming until I got the call reminding me about Landon’s appointment. But I think I had better be letting you go so you can go prep for the show. Don’t you think?”
“Yeah, I guess you are right.”
“Call us whenever the show is over and let us know how it went, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Goodbye Ted,” I said knowing that Teddy was going to freak when he actually saw us walking backstage and into his dressing room. “We will talk to you later.”
“Bye,’ Teddy sighed as he hung up the phone.
“Oh Landon…your daddy is in for a real surprise,” I said with a smile as I stopped at the stop sign.
-When It Comes-
A good hour and a half had passed since I had left my house with Landon in the backseat, sleeping soundly. We were now getting our parking spot at the venue where Teddy was going to be performing in about ten minutes. Ten minutes was just enough time for us to get backstage and surprise Teddy right before going on stage.
“Let’s go see daddy,” I said somewhat excitedly as I began to take Landon out of her car seat. “I’m sorry to wake you up sweetie, but you’ve got to go see daddy do what he does best on stage.”
“Kourtni?” a voice called out.
I turned around and saw Jamie and Drake walking towards me.
“Jamie…there’s something different about you, but I cannot figure out what it is. Care to enlighten me on what’s happening here?” I questioned as I hugged Jamie.
“I want to see the little one. I have yet to see her,” Drake spoke up.
“Here you are,” I said as I handed Landon over to Drake. “Her name is Landon Kate, but we like to call her Landon. Now Jamie, what’s up with you? It’s been months, hasn’t it?”
“It has been months. And I’m now expecting my own little bundle of joy with Drake. We’re even getting married,” Jamie said excitedly.
“Serious?”
“Yeah, I’m being completely serious. So, how are things with you and Ted?”
“Well, today is basically the first time I’ve seen him in almost four months. The last time I saw him, well…it wasn’t that great. He said his mom wasn’t going to allow him to keep flying down here every other weekend because it was starting to cost too much. So…he basically said break it off or move to New York with him.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I haven’t really figured that one out Jamie. I don’t want to pack up my stuff and leave home, but then again I don’t want things to end with me and Teddy.”
“I understand…somewhat.”
“Well, I need to be taking little Landon back because we have to be backstage in like three minutes or else it’ll ruin the surprise,” I said Drake handed Landon back to me. “It was nice getting to talk to you. See you later,” I waved as I headed for the venue.
-When It Comes-
After arguing with the security guard for nearly a minute, Landon and I were finally let backstage. I immediately spotted Teddy who was leaned up against some sort of table that had a ton of water bottles on top of it, his back towards Landon and me. Before I got too close, I dug out my cell phone and dialed his number.
“Hello,” Teddy quickly answered.
“Hi…has the show started yet?” I questioned, knowing it obviously hadn’t started yet.
“It is fixing to in like five minutes. How’d the appointment go?”
“Why don’t you turn around and find out for yourself?”
“Okay?” Teddy said in a confused voice.
He hung up the phone, turned around, saw us, and smiled. I started walking towards him again.
“Sneaky…very nice,” he laughed as he gave me a hug. “Wow. She’s gotten big since the last time I’ve seen her.”
“Yeah…that’s what four months does to you,” I said as Teddy took Landon out of my arms.
“So, have you thought any more about the whole moving situation?”
“Yeah, I have. Matter of fact, I have an answer for you…but I don’t have enough time to tell you right now. It looks like you are fixing to go on stage.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Uh, your band just walked on stage. Now give me the baby and you go do what you do best, okay?”
“Whatever,” Teddy laughed as he kissed my forehead and handed Landon back over to me.
“We love you! And Landon wishes her daddy good luck!”
-When It Comes-
Teddy had been onstage for about thirty minutes. He said that he was fixing to do a special song for his someone special, which was hopefully me. I guess I would find out when he started to sing the song.
“Typically I don’t sing country music…but this song, I feel, relates to my life right now,” Teddy said. “I hope you enjoy,” he said as he sat down at the piano.
What song was he possibly talking about? This had me thinking of a million different songs in my head.
“Ordinary, no…really don’t think so, not a love this true. Common destiny, we were meant to be…me and you. Like a perfect scene from a movie screen, we’re a dream come true. Suited perfectly for eternity…me and you,” he started.
Ah…it was ‘Me and You’ by Kenny Chesney. I always loved this song. I even hoped it would one day be my wedding song, but that was a different story.
“Every day I need you even more and the nighttime too. There’s no way I could ever let you even if I wanted to. Every day I live, try my best to give all I have to you. Thank the stars above that we share this love, me and you,” Teddy sang as he looked to the side of the stage where Landon and I were standing. “Every day I need you even more and the nighttime too. There’s no way I could ever let you go, even if I wanted to. Ordinary…no, really don’t think so. Just a precious few ever make it last, get as lucky as me and you.”
The song had ended, and I was pretty much in tears. My crying had even upset Landon and started to make her cry.
-When It Comes-
The show had ended, and I was driving Teddy back to his hotel. Now was the perfect time for us to talk about the whole living arrangements.
“So…you said you’ve thought about it?” Teddy asked as we pulled out of the venue parking lot.
“I have thought about it a lot…yes,” I replied as I came to the red light.
“Well, what have you decided? What do you want to do? And tell me the truth, I can handle the truth.”
“I told my mom about everything, and she left the decision completely up to me.”
“Okay?”
“Teddy…”
“Yes?”
“I have decided to move in with you.”
“Really?”
“Yes, I thought about it for a long time and that’s what I want to do. There’s no WAY I could break this thing off with you. It would be too tough on me, but more importantly I’m moving in with you because of Landon. She needs her dad in her life.”
“For some strange reason I thought you were going to say no. I mean, I knew you didn’t want us to break up or anything but I honestly didn’t think you would be willing to pack up your things and move to New York.”
“It is going to be something that I’ll have to get used to, but I’m willing to take this chance. It’s going to be crazy hard trying to get used to life without my friends and family right next door, but I’ll have your family close by…and that’s pretty awesome. While I’m thinking about it, have you even looked at houses yet?”
“I haven’t looked at any houses, but I’ve looked at several nice apartments. I figured we’d start out in a nice apartment and move to a house in a few years, maybe when there’s another little one or something.”
“Oh Ted, there won’t be another one of those for MANY years. You don’t have to worry about that for quite a while.”
“You don’t know that,” Teddy laughed. “I am just kidding with you. So, are you dead serious about moving to New York with me?”
“Yes, I am dead serious about it. I cannot live another day without you by my side. It’s been so hard on me these past five months, raising Landon by myself isn’t the easiest task.”
“I know it hasn’t been the easiest thing in the world. I just wish I could’ve been there more often than I was. I hate doing this stop by once a month thing. That is why I’m happy that you chose to move to New York with me.”
“I would be stupid to turn you down on that offer.”
“No, you wouldn’t be stupid. When we get back to the hotel, there’s something I need to give you.”
“Okay. Can you tell me what it is now so I’ll know what to expect?”
“No, that would be cheating. It is going to remain a surprise until we get back in my hotel room. If I told you what it was, then I’d have to hurt myself. You wouldn’t like that, would you?”
“No…of course I wouldn’t like that. I’m just nervous to find out what it is.”
“It is nothing to be nervous about, I promise. If you don’t love it then, I’ll take it back to the store and exchange it for something else.”
“If it turns out to be something I should’ve been nervous about, be aware because I may just hurt you. You know I don’t settle well with some surprises.”
“This wouldn’t isn’t going to make you pass out or anything…at least I hope it won’t,” Teddy said as we pulled into the hotel parking lot. “And she is still sleeping.”
“She is a sleepy little girl. She had to be woken up from her nap today or else we wouldn’t have made it to the show.”
“I understand,” Teddy said as he opened the backseat passenger door and hopped in and began to unbuckle Landon’s car seat.
“That is mighty nice of you.”
“I have to be nice sometimes,” Teddy laughed as we headed into the hotel.
I wondered about what kind of surprise Teddy could be talking about. Part of me wanted to believe him and not be nervous about it, but the other part was terrified because I didn’t even have the slightest clue about what it was. I guess I would just have to wait until we got to the room to find out.
