"Seth?" I asked later that night, after we had ate dinner and were heading to the bowling alley. "I'm sorry."
"What for?" He laughed.
"I'm just... I don't know." I shrugged. "I thought that this would be the best thing ever, and I'm not saying that you're not fun or anything, I'm just saying, I think it would be best if we ended this date early?"
He nodded and smiled. "It's ok. I'm glad that you were honest with me. Most girls would've been like 'Oh I'm out on a date with Seth Riggins, so what if I don't like him he's on the football team!' But you're honest."
I nodded and smiled. Most girls at school would've been like that.
"I had a good time."
I nodded and smiled at him. "Yeah."

"So?" Tallie asked the next day at our lockers.
"So what?"
"You don't just end a date early for no reason," Tallie told me.
"I just wasn't feeling it."
"What?!" She laughed.
"I know. I just realized he wasn't what I wanted," I told her as I shut my locker.
"Who wasn't what you wanted?" Teddy asked as he joined us.
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
"Seth Riggins." Tallie revealed.
"Oh." He whispered and made a knowing face, then changed the subject. "So. Big project coming up in Biology, Bai. Want to be my partner?"
"Sure." I agreed. "As long as Mr. Woods doesn't assign us partners."
He nodded and laughed. Mr. Woods was known to suddenly change his students' partners in the middle of a project. He said it "Kept the ideas fresh". Yeah right.

"Ok. Project." He announced. "Each group will get a system of the body and tell about it. Don't worry about picking your own partners, I'm picking them for you."
Obviously, he was in a bad mood.
"Teddy Geiger and Brandon Anderson, the circulatory system." I felt disappointed. I really had wanted to be Teddy's partner. "Bailey Connor and Seth Riggins, the muscular system." Oh fun. Psh, yeah right.
I looked to Teddy and mouthed 'Sorry' he nodded and said it was ok.
"Hello again," Seth smiled at me as he joined me at my table. "So how about we meet at my house after we both get done with practice to work on this?"
I nodded. "That sounds good. I'll see you then." I made a mental note to call my Mom to let her know. Suddenly I felt very nervous about going over to a guy's house. Why was I so nervous?

"Hey there." He smiled at me as he opened the door in a pair of sweat pants and a hoodie. He did look rather hott standing there like that. He had obviously just got out of the shower, because his blonde hair was still a little wet.
"Hey." I said nervously, my hair also still damp from showering off after practice.
"Nice outfit." He laughed.
"Yeah. We match." I laughed as I looked down to my grey sweat pants that said 'Bucs Cheerleading' across the top of them and my black hoodie. "Go Bucs." I joked. Wow. I know that was completely lame.
"Yeah, I know, right? I can't wait 'til it's all over." He told me as we went into the kitchen where he had a tri-fold poster board and his Biology book waiting on us. "I went ahead and got the poster board on my way home from school."
"That's cool. I've got some markers in my car." I told him before going to get them and then coming back.
He really did look rather attractive in his sweat pants. I was starting to doubt my actions last night. Maybe I should've went on the whole date, because right now, I'm feeling very attracted to him.

"I'm sorry for cutting the date short last night," I told him. "I was just... Stupid."
"You're not stupid." He told me. "Come sit over here." He told me as he patted the seat next to him on the couch.
We had started watching TV after we finished our project.
"I like you." He confessed.
What was I supposed to say to that? I didn't have time to respond, because his lips met mine, inhibiting my ability to speak.
"So what do you say?" He asked curiously, his eyes staring straight into mine. "Will you be my girlfriend?"

I shook my head. "I'm sorry." What was I apologizing for? I was telling him how I really felt. "I can't."
He nodded. "It's ok."
I nodded. "Ok. I'll see you at school tomorrow."

"Why did you say no?" Tallie asked. "I specifically remember you saying 'Oh he's so hot. Why can't I get a guy like that?' Well guess what?! You did, but you shot him down."
I rolled my eyes as she continued. "Plus, he's a football player. Do you know how many girls at our school would kill to have a football player ask them out?"
I rolled my eyes again. "I'm not like most girls at our school, Tallie."
"I know, but you can't be single for the rest of your life, Bai!" She sighed. "I've tried to help you. Why can't you just try it?"
"Because I don't know what I want!" I knew I shouldn't have yelled, but I was tired of hearing it. Brooke always made fun of me... My Mom nagged me about being more social... And now I didn't want to hear it from my best friend.
"Well, let me know when you're in a better mood, k?" She hung up on me and I sighed as I rolled the window down.
The air was cold, but it helped keep tears out of my eyes. I wasn't sad, I was frustrated and tired of hearing it from everyone.

awww, this is cute. bucs? two a days? that reminds me... season two of that show... i thought it was coming out this winter. that's what i was thinking about too lol. it said it was coming back in early 2007...so hopefully soon. |
