"I'm a high school counselor," I sighed as a co-worker, Leigha and I ate our lunches. "Not a miracle-worker. These kids come to me and they say, 'fix me'. I don't have a practice, I can't prescribe drugs, all I am here for is for them to talk to me so that I can help them work through their grade problems, relationship problems or whatever issues they may be having."
Leigha nodded and gave a slight chuckle as she took a bite of her sandwich. "I totally get it. It's like how these kids say 'My teacher is failing me'. I'm not failing them, they're either sleeping through the class or they're not even doing any work. Simple as that."
The bell rang, signalling the end of all the lunch periods, and the fact that we had to get back to work. "Have fun with that James Mills. I'm guessing I'll have him in your office by five after this time?"
I laughed and nodded. "Sounds like a date."
Teddy and I had been married for two years now and everything was just like I had pictured it. I don't say that in a cliche, storybook way either, we've had our days where we couldn't stand something the other has done, but at the end of the day, we know that all we can do is just kiss and make up.
We have crazy neighbors, Delilah and Mark who are from Texas. She's constantly baking brownies and cookies and sending them over as if we can't cook our own baked goods if we wanted to. Don't get me wrong, they were really nice people, but sometimes it seemed like the only reason they sent everything over was to snoop around and find out what was going inside the biggest house on the block.
"So tell me James," I said as I interlocked my fingers and rested them in front of me on the desk. "Do you plan on staying an extra year in high school? I mean, you are already two years older than everyone else in your grade. From looking at your file, I can see that you worked hard when you were a freshman, but after that you just stopped."
He scoffed like I didn't know what I was talking about. "You don't know me."
I rolled my eyes; That was the reaction I got from most of the students who were having grade problems as well as behavioral problems in class. "That's true. I'm not your best friend. I'm not your parents. The only time I ever have a conversation with you is when you're in here. Now, I'm trying to tell you your options."
He looked at me with his dark brown eyes and gave me a smirk like he was actually paying attention.
"I hear you like cars." I smiled. "Do you want to be a mechanic or a designer?"
He shook his head. "I want to be a firefighter."
"Ok. Well, you're in that volunteer program, right?" He nodded and I silently cheered as I felt like I was gaining ground. "That will help you get jobs with them. But it's still important to get your diploma. Salary increases, and even if you go to college just for general studies and you get a diploma there, your pay increases even more. Am I making sense?"
He nodded. "Ok. From now on, I'm assigning you a tutor. Tim has a rather high GPA and I think that he can help you out a lot. Are you willing to study more?"
He shrugged. "It's up to you. Tim will be here this afternoon until four thirty, so if you show up, he'll continue." He nodded. "I hope you take my advice." I nodded and with that he left the room, followed by myself. I needed water. I never knew that high school kids could be so... complicated.
"Reese Geiger, the Super Counselor." Another counselor named Adam Taylor said to me. He acted and looked just like Adam Brody, which was rather odd.
"Your glasses are crooked," I informed him and he straightened them and untucked half of his collar from underneath his sweater.
"And no. I won't eat lunch with you tomorrow." I told him. "But I'm sure Leigha would love too."
Suddenly, I remembered a doctor's appointement as I walked by the front desk. I ran back to my office and grabbed my purse before informing the lady at the desk. She nodded and laughed at my scatterbrained mind as I ran out to my car.
++++++++++++++++++++
"How was the doctor?" Teddy asked as I walked through the garage and into kitchen.
"It was good."
"Anything you should tell me?"
I laughed. "I don't know. What qualifies as something I should tell you?"
"I don't know... maybe that we'll have a reason to paint that room and add some more color to our house. Maybe that we'll have a reason to wake up at three in the morning..."
"Ok, ok." I laughed. "I'm two months pregnant."
He began to grin as he stood up and hugged me. "I love you."
I smiled. "I love you."
"I'm going to call my parents and tell them." He laughed. "Maybe we should invite them over for dinner your Mom, my parents... Abby, Lindsey, Gabe, Jessica and Danny."
I laughed as he spastically racked his brain to make plans. "Ok. Ok. Call them and invite them over for tomorrow night and then I will invite my family, ok?"
He nodded as he gave me a kiss. "Love you."
"Love you." He turned the phone on and began dialing numbers as the doorbell rang. "Ten bucks says its Delilah," I called out as I made my way to the door.
"Hey there!" She said in her usual perky tone. "I made cookies! Chocolate chip."
"You know you don't have to do that," I smiled politely. "Sorry I don't have time to return the favor, I'm just working and then cooking for us..."
She nodded as the smile on her face never faded. "So how are you two doing?"
"Good. You?"
"We're great," She smiled as she waved at Mark, who was climbing into his truck, most likely to buy a jug of milk. He was so whipped. "We just found out that we're having a boy!" She said happily.
"Oh. Congratulations." I said. "I'm pregnant too. But only two months. Look, I need to get back and fix something for us to eat, but I'll talk to you later, ok?"
She nodded as Teddy came into the doorway. "Hey Teddy. See you guys later!"
"Bye!" Teddy and I waved as we plastered polite smiles on our faces and then shut the door.
"Wow. More cookies." He laughed. "Looks like we're going to have to hire Evan to eat them all. Who am I kidding?! He'd eat them for free!"
"Come on, I feel like pizza." I laughed as I picked up the phone to order our dinner.
++++++++++++++++++++
"I don't think I've ever been this happy in my life," Teddy said later that night as we lay in bed, attempting to fall asleep.
"Me either." I smiled at him in the dark, and I knew he could see it. "What do you want to name it?"
"It?" He laughed. "Well... I want it to be a girl."
I laughed. "Ok. So if it is a girl... what name do you like?"
"Bailey," He said after thinking for a minute. "What about you?"
"Willow." I said. "It just sounds like one of those.. mature names."
"Bailey Willow Geiger." I could hear him smiling. "I really want a girl."
I smiled. Honestly, I wanted one too. I was a girl, so I knew more about them than boys. They were just easier for me.
Tomorrow was going to be interesting.
Leigha nodded and gave a slight chuckle as she took a bite of her sandwich. "I totally get it. It's like how these kids say 'My teacher is failing me'. I'm not failing them, they're either sleeping through the class or they're not even doing any work. Simple as that."
