Chapter 12
Over the proceeding weeks, Austin and Roxy went out on numerous dates. At first, Roxy was just trying to move on from Teddy, but Austin was such a gentleman, always opening doors and paying when they went out, that she always found herself looking forward to spending more time with him. He was spontaneous and constantly surprising her with gifts, even if it was just a small chocolate he picked up at the store. They were sweet ways of letting her know he thought about her.
When they weren’t together, they were usually on the phone. Roxy loved their conversations, never a dull moment. And he was continuously making her laugh. Austin was truly gentle-hearted and was misunderstood by most at their school.
Because he was the good looking jock, many just saw the surface layer of him; his looks. But she found him to be a very intelligent guy, with more on his mind than just girls and sports, which is how most at their school perceived him to be.
Austin was also a great listener, but no matter how perfect he was, Roxy always had a little voice in the back of her head which persistently compared him to Teddy; however, she was usually not willing to listen.
Meanwhile, Teddy didn’t bother calling her again. Roxy had cut him deep with her words, but realized he hadn’t been fair to Claire. She didn’t deserve him kissing another girl, and he never told her. If Roxy didn’t want to be with him, he’d have to deal with that. He had Claire. Even though he couldn’t stop replaying the kiss in his head, he acted as if it never happened. Inside he was crushed, but didn’t want others to see it, because it was Claire he was with.
However, he couldn’t deny, it was Roxy he was in love with.
There was something about her. She just made him feel comfortable and when he wasn’t with her, he couldn’t wait to be around her next. He missed how she could get him to relax if he felt stressed with just a nudge of her shoulder. And she had been always there to listen, and always gave a new perspective on things. They had great conversations that he lived for. With everything going on in his life, all the hassles of the business, and people wanting his time, Roxy was a breath of fresh air that he needed. And now she was gone.
She was moving on, so why couldn’t he?

“You alright?” Emma asked, walking into the basement of Teddy’s house, a week before Christmas.
Teddy was sitting at the piano, staring off into space. He glanced up at his cousin, but didn’t say a word.
Emma wasn’t stupid. She knew what was going on inside his mind. “You miss Roxy, don’t you?”
Teddy sighed. Emma was probably the one person who knew him better than he knew himself and there was no hiding from her. “I kissed her.”
“Wait, what?” Emma was surprised, since Roxy hadn’t told her anything. “When?”
“The Saturday I got back from tour.”
“Ted, that was almost a month ago.”
“I know.” His voice was soft.
“No wonder she’s been acting strange.” She whispered loudly, turning it over in her brain. Then she looked back at Teddy, “And I’m guessing Claire doesn’t know?”
“No way.”
“So what happened after you kissed her?” Emma was curious.
“For a second, I could swear she enjoyed it, but then all of a sudden she freaked out. Telling me she couldn’t. Then the next day, she told me that the kiss was a mistake and that she didn’t want to be the one who broke me and Claire up. I haven’t spoken to her since.”
“Wow. I thought something was going on, but Roxy wouldn’t say a word.” Emma’s eyes were a bit big as she took it all in. After a few moments, Emma focused back on Teddy. She placed a hand on his knee sympathetically. “She’s had a hard time with you and Claire dating, and she was doing the best she could accepting it. But then you threw her this curve ball. For the short time I’ve known Roxy, I know it pains her to see you two together, even if she doesn’t admit it, and she’s not the type of person who would stand in your way if Claire made you happy. I’m guessing she’s just trying to put space between you two, so things don’t get even more complicated. She’s dating Austin, so I’m guessing she’s trying to move on now.”
Teddy winced with jealousy when she said his name. “I really like Claire, I do.” Teddy started.
“But you love Roxy.” Emma finished for him.
Teddy looked up at Emma, a bit stunned that she took the words right out of his head.
“You don’t give me enough credit.” She smiled. “But as much as I hate to say this, don’t do anything.”
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t mess this up for her, Ted. She really likes Austin and you missed your chance. She deserves to be happy.”

Christmas Eve had finally arrived, and Austin came over to bake gingerbread cookies with Roxy and her family. They all had aprons on, even Austin and Roxy’s father- the men. Roxy, Austin, and Roxy’s fourteen-year-old sister, Amy, were mixing the dough, flour practically flying everywhere.
Austin was stirring his dough with an expression on his face that showed he was working hard, when Roxy laughed.
Hearing her giggles, Austin looked up. “What?”
Roxy took her index finger and wiped a piece of goo from his left cheek. “You had dough on your face.” She laughed again, this time Austin and her family joining in.
“Thanks babe.” Austin gave her a peck on the lips. They were officially dating and Roxy couldn’t help but love his kisses. They were soft and warm, but the nagging feeling regularly told her they weren’t like Teddy’s.
She was starting to resent the voice in her head. It couldn’t just leave her alone and let her be happy. Teddy was obviously happy with Claire, from the looks on their faces on the cover of the National Inquirer. Why shouldn’t she be?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When Roxy and the rest were finishing up decorating the gingerbread men, the doorbell rang, interrupting their fun. Roxy wiped her hands off quickly on a dish towel, and ran to the door, while the others stayed in the kitchen.
Opening the door, Roxy didn’t find anyone, until she looked down. There was an adorable little pug puppy in a dog carrier sitting on the front porch. “Oh my goodness, you sweet thing.” Roxy bent down to look at the pup, and noticed a note tided to the small door. She untied the ribbon, and opened the tiny envelope. Inside, she read the note:
Bubbles,
Here is the puppy you’ve always wished for.
Her name is Molly.
-Geiger
A sudden sadness chilled her bones as she glanced up, looking for any sign of Teddy still around. He had remembered--meaning he still thought about her. Something inside her twisted and she had to admit that she thought about him as well. It had been over a month since she last talked to him, and her heart ached to hear his voice.
Roxy looked down at the puppy all her own. Molly. Roxy wondered if Teddy named her, or if she was given that name before.
Roxy picked up the carrier, and brought Molly into the warm house, heading straight for the living room.
“Hey, who was that?” Amy asked, and got sight of the new dog. “Oh my gosh, a puppy!” She kneeled next to Roxy as she opened the cage door, and Molly jumping out. The girls giggled in delight.
“Whoa.” Mr. Parker came into the room, followed by his wife and Austin. “Where’d the puppy come from?”
Roxy looked up at her father in between licks. “She’s a gift to me. Can I keep her, Dad, please?”
“A gift from whom?” Mrs. Parker asked, stepping closer to her daughter. She smiled at the dog, as it came bouncing towards her with excitement. She was an animal lover, and couldn’t help but think the puppy was precious.
“Teddy.” Roxy said, becoming aware of how Austin might take it. Roxy saw his expression turn a bit sour, with a hint of jealousy in his eyes. “Her name’s Molly. Please, can I keep her? I’ll take care of her and everything. You won’t have to do anything.” Roxy pleaded, deciding to not deal with Austin right away.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Shortly after the puppy arrived, Roxy and Austin exchanged their gifts. He had bought her a soft, leather bound journal because he knew she loves to write lyrics and poetry. And she bought him a t-shirt of his favorite band. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, Austin was acting differently and knew he didn’t like the fact that Teddy had gotten her a puppy.
It was starting to get late, and Austin needed to get home.
“Merry Christmas baby.” Austin smiled, as him and Roxy were by her front door.
“Merry Christmas.” Roxy looked up at his blue eyes and told herself they weren’t like Teddy’s, but kicked herself mentally as soon as she had done it. She kissed him lightly on the lips and gave him a hug. He was a bit taller than her, so she sank into his chest, and breathed in his scent; not like Teddy’s either, but still nice just the same. “Call me tomorrow?”
“You got it.” He gave her another kiss, and opened the door to leave. Roxy waved to him once he was in the car, and then closed the door to keep the warmth in.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
So, I hope you liked it!
Let me know..
