Chapter 8
“Teddy…get up NOW!” I yelled at Teddy as I felt pains in my stomach and back. “I mean it! GET UP NOW!”
“What did I do?” Teddy asked as he sat up in bed. “What is wrong with you?”
“This baby is not waiting any longer. He is coming out today. We need to get to the hospital NOW! This is KILLING ME! GET UP!”
“Getting up,’ Teddy said as he jumped out of bed and grabbed our bags. “Let’s call your mom and get on the road.”
“There is no time to call my mom! Get me to the hospital first.”
“Okay.”
-Something More-
Sitting in the bed I heard the door open. In walked Melissa and Zac. I was so excited to see them here. It meant a lot.
“Teddy!” I screamed as I felt a contraction.
“I’m here. I’m here,” Teddy replied as he took my hand. “I’m going to call the doctor in here. She needs to check on you. You have been like this for two hours now. It should be close to time for pushing.”
“If she doesn’t hurry up and get in here, I’m having this baby on my own. I know how this works.”
“I’m calling her now.”
-Something More-
“He is almost here,” my doctor called out. “Stop pushing. Just breathe now.”
“Got it,” I said as I continued to breathe.
“Here is your beautiful baby boy,” she said seconds later as she placed Bolton on my stomach.
“Teddy! He looks just like you! Look at that face. He is already taking after you with those facial expressions. He is beautiful.”
“Oh my…he is beautiful. I love you for doing this,” Teddy sighed as he leaned over and kissed my forehead. “You are my hero.”
“I love you for being here with me,” I smiled as I kissed Teddy again.
“I’m going to take him to the nurses. He needs to be weighed and measured,” the doctor said as she took Bolton over to the nurses.
-Something More-
Hours had passed since Bolton was born. Teddy and I were waiting, in my room, for the doctor to come back and tell us when we would be able to take Bolton home. Both of us were hoping it would be soon. I didn’t know how much longer I could stay in the hospital, since I practically hated them.
“He is crying! I cannot get him to stop! What do I do?” Teddy nervously asked as he paced around the room with Bolton in his arms.
“Sing to him. He always seemed to be quiet when you sang while he was in my stomach. I think he likes it,” I replied.
“What song should I sing?”
“I don’t know. Sing whatever song you want to sing. It doesn’t bother me.”
“Ok,” Teddy replied. “Caught up in what’s in. Caught up in the things that everyone wants. Caught up in what’s out. Caught up in the things that you could do without. What if I was one of them? So I will say…well if I live for a million years I would be right there to catch your tears. Will you get over it this time? And, is this the last time?”
“I don’t think he likes that song.”
“I need a break it’s all the same, under the sweet December rain. Just a crack of yellow light to shine on my head. You’ll find that I fought for the right to laugh with my eyes ‘til tears would fall. And the salt would hit my lips with some love to help me survive. Don’t you want it? I’ve never seen anyone who wants it this bad. You said games were much more fun. I’d rather play than get things done. Well, look where we are now.”
“He likes that song,” I replied as I heard the door open.
Seconds later the doctor walked in. She had a smile on her face. Maybe the smile meant she had good news for us. Maybe she was going to tell us we could go home tomorrow. I hoped that was what she would tell us.
“How are things going?” she asked as she sat down in a chair.
“Things are going well,” I replied. “Do you have any good news for us? Please tell me you do.”
“I have excellent news for you.”
“Okay!”
“We have decided to let you go home now. We’ve looked at everything and it is all clear for you to go home. I will have some nurses come in here and help you get unhooked from all of these wires.”
“Thank you so much.”
-Something More-
“And this is your home Bolton,” I said as Teddy opened the door to the house.
“Welcome home,” Teddy smiled as he looked back at me.
“It is such a relief to have you little guy. Your daddy and I would not have lasted much longer without you. We missed you so much.”
“I love you,” Teddy replied as he kissed Bolton’s forehead. “Kourtni, I have something for you. It’s only a few days until your birthday, so I went on and got you something today.”
“What is it?” I asked as I placed my bags by the door. “Call my mom and tell her to get those please.”
“Let me go and get it,” Teddy said as he walked out of the room heading towards the kitchen.
“Hurry please. Bolton is getting sleepy. You will have to sing him to sleep.”
“I am hurrying,” Teddy replied as he walked back in the room with a box in his hand.
“What is that? What is in that box?”
“It is a promise ring,” Teddy said as he opened the box to reveal a beautiful diamond band. “I have a matching one.”
“This is beautiful,” I replied as Teddy carefully took Bolton from my arms. “Are you leaving soon? Is this why you gave this to me now?”
“Actually…yes, that is the reason. Mom found out shortly after Bolton was born that I had a few shows in New York. I will only be gone for a week. I told mom and management I could not be away from home for more than a week.”
“Good idea.”
-Something More-
Rolling over in bed, I saw Teddy was up with Bolton. He had been up with him all night, and I felt bad about it. I quickly got out of bed and walked over to him.
“Let me take him,” I whispered as I tapped Teddy on his shoulder. “You have been up with him all night long. It is about time I do something. I feel like I haven’t done anything for him. You give him to me and get yourself some rest.”
“Are you sure? I can stay up as long as you want me to. I’m not tired,” Teddy sighed as he handed Bolton over to me.
“I am sure. You have to leave for New York tomorrow morning. You need all the sleep you can get.”
“You need sleep too.”
“Come again?”
“I said you need sleep too.”
“What are you talking about? Why do I need sleep? I’m not going anywhere.”
“You are going somewhere.”
“Where?”
“You are going with me to New York.”
“Are you out of your mind? I cannot leave Bolton here with my mom or someone else. He is too young for that kind of thing.”
“No. He is going with us.”
“Are you crazy? He is a little baby. They will not let him on a plane! He has to be at least three weeks old before he can fly. What happens if he gets sick on the plane? I’m not going to know what to do.”
“They will let him on the plan. I already checked with the airport.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.”
“Alright. I guess we are going on a family vacation to New York,” I sighed as Teddy took Bolton from my arms. “I had better go on and pack his bags.”
