"Everybody dies famous in a small town..." -- Miranda Lambert 'Famous In a Small Town'
Part One
1
Tessa sighed as she rolled out of bed. Another day in the same city she had always been a part of. She wouldn't have mind so much if it had been New York or California or even Vegas... At least something interesting would be happening. Today was just any other day. She had graduated two years ago. Class of 2006. There was nothing else special to say about it, though.
So she had been voted the female class musician... No one really paid that much attention to her when she wasn't singing. She was too quiet, too ordinary. She got lost in the crowd easily. Even in her group of friends, she was the quiet one, and while her friends knew who she was and noticed her, curious onlookers would probably think she didn't belong.
So what if she was going to college... She didn't know what she wanted to do "when she grew up", so her major was simply general studies.
Her phone buzzed next to her on the mattress. Hailey. "Hey, what’s up?"
"Hey rock star," Hailey always greeted her like that. "Guess who's singing at the shop tonight?"
"Hmmm, Neil Diamond?" Tessa joked. Hailey was always setting up little gigs for her around town, so she knew Hailey was talking about her. But in the middle of Nowheresville, Georgia, it didn't get you very far. Not that she was even sure she wanted to go far.
"Wow, she's a mind reader too!" Hailey joked. "So Lauren and I heard there's a new guy in town." Lauren was their other best friend, who was known to be quite the partier in high school. But she had grown more mature and sentimental after gradaution.
News... More like gossip travels fast in a small town - even faster if you were from their town, and Hailey was usually the first to hear it. Usually, the gossip ended up being just that – gossip, but occasionally Hailey had the inside scoop.
“Do I seriously have to play tonight?” Tessa groaned. “I played last night. And I have to work today.”
“Yes, you’re playing.” Hailey ordered. “I even convinced the boys to back you up, so its going to be super amazing, Tess.”
“The boys” were their closest friends: Ty, Marshall, Brady, and Cooper. Brady and Hailey had been dating for years – no one knew the exact amount except Tessa, because everyone else got tired of counting, because of all of the “breaks” they took. But their rather eccentric relationship was what caused the formation of their group. They were famous in their small town and always would be, even if they didn’t make their mark on the world.
“Fine.” Usually the boys had their own shows to do, which was why it was such a big deal.
“Oh wear the black shiny tank top tonight! It looks hot on you!” Hailey ordered her. “I have to go, the salon's opening so I'll see you later!”
Tessa groaned as she flopped backwards onto her mattress. Her blond hair hung over the edge. After sitting like that for a minute, she sat up and began getting ready for the day ahead of her.
She packed a gym bag with clothes to change into after she finished working at the pet store. She brushed her teeth and told her older sister, Ellie she was leaving before running out the door.
She wondered how long she could go before she realized who and what she wanted to be.
