Man it's been a while since I worked on this. a long while. Idk I went through a phase, (this happens alot,) where I would rather read than write and so I did and I'm rambling. Here ya go.
The holidays came and passed, and it had become mid February. Teddy had been working writing for his album non-stop, and we were going great. I was hustling to get ready for school when my cell rang.
“What?!” I exclaimed.
“Well, somebody woke up on the wring side of the bed,” Teddy’s voice chided me.
“No, I’m just rushing. I’m in a rush. In other words I don’t have much time,” I said.
“Okay, I get the hint-”
“No! Teddy, no. What do you need?”
“I was wondering if you wanted to take the day off.”
“You mean like, skip school?” I set down empty plate on the counter.
“That is exactly what I mean. What do you say?” I could almost hear him smiling as he spoke.
“I think I could manage that. I’m assuming you are skipping also?”
“You assume correctly.”
“And I’m guessing that I will be meeting up with you? After all it wouldn’t be logical for us to both skip school alone now would it?”
“Definitely not logical. I’ll meet you at Starbucks in twenty minutes, and we’ll go from there. Sound like a plan?”
“Yup, you got it,” I agreed before hanging up. I laughed softly to myself. Mr. Spontaneous.
I snuck out of the house without being noticed, leaving my mom a note saying I couldn’t drive Olivia to school because Teddy was bringing me to breakfast before we left. Not totally a lie.
I pulled up and parked the car when I got to there. Looking through the window I saw Teddy sitting at table. He’d already ordered.
“Hello there, stranger,” I greeted him with a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey, I got your usual,” he grinned. “Now I have a proposition to make.”
“Yes,” I nodded.
“What would you say to a couple days in New York City?” He offered.
“I wouldn’t say no that’s for sure!”
“Good, because I’m going to work on recording the album and it’s got to be done there. I would feel lonely if I went with just my parents.” He made a puppy dog face and I responded by rolling my eyes.
“Silly you wouldn’t be alone. I’ll come though; I just have to check with my mom,” I said as I stirred my cappuccino.
“Well…we’re … sort of leaving today,” he sputtered.
“Oh? Whoa, short notice. What time?”
Teddy glanced at his watch. “Half an hour. At seven-thirty. So not rushing you…”
I stared at him, mouth agape, and he snickered. I wasn’t one to make split decisions, but this sounded like fun. It would only take a moment to dash home and throw some stuff together…I was almost seventeen going on eighteen, I certainly didn’t need my mother’s permission for everything I did.
“I should probably go home and get my stuff really fast then,” I smiled.
Ted’s face lit up and he came over to give me a sloppy kiss. “Yes! No more loneliness!”
“Geiger watch it, we’re in public,” I laughed, watching Teddy beam at me. “Now come let’s get to it.”
Twenty minutes later and I had gathered all my things and was loading them into the Geiger’s van. Teddy’s mom turned to me, “Honey, you’re sure that your mom's okay with you coming?”
“Yeah, definitely. In fact she told me to stay as long as I want,” I lied. I glanced at Teddy and noticed he was shaking his head smiling.
“It’s just I feel horrible about taking you on such short notice. Maybe I should call her, just so I’ll feel better.”
“NO!” I stopped her as she reached for her cell. “She’s busy driving to work. I don’t want her to get into an accident. I’m really paranoid about that kind of stuff because of everything that happened.”
She nodded, completely buying my lies. I was going to have some serious karma coming around at me.
Mr. Geiger came rushing from the house with some last minute items, and we all got in the car.
The drive was long, a few hours, but it wasn’t a big deal. It started to rain, which made Teddy happy. He sat there staring out of the window, “racing raindrops” to put it in his words.
We finally got to the hotel and checked it. We got settled, and in about an hour I went outside to “call my mother.” What I really did was dial up Danielle leaving her a message on her phone. Of course she was in school for another three or four hours. I heard footsteps and noticed Ted standing behind me.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“It’s cold.”
“Yeah.”
“You should get a jacket.”
“Yeah.”
“Strong but silent type, huh?” I giggled.
“Yeah,” he laughed. “Listen I’m heading down to the studio. My parents are coming, but they can’t stay. They’re going to meet up with some of their old friends. You know, from before I moved away from here. Soo let’s gets a steppin’”
“Okey dokey, smokey,” I said. “I would love to see you at work.”
The studio was amazing. I couldn’t stop staring all around me, at all of the equipment. Billy Mann, the guy who signed Teddy (or if you want to get technical, the producer,) noticed and started laughing.
“You get used to it all, really. It’s not that special,” he smiled.
“But while you’re not used to it, it’s pretty special,” I laughed. Teddy and his parents had to go sign some papers, so I stayed and looked at the pictures of other artists on the wall. After a while of me feeling like a tag-a-long, Teddy started with his music. While he was recording vocals for one of my favorites, Gentlemen, his parents came over to me.
“Hey hon, we’re going to leave for a bit. We’re meeting up with some old friends. We’ll be back later. Are you two okay here alone?” Mr. Geiger asked.
“I think so. I mean, look at him,” I said pointing to Teddy, who was discussing something with another man, “he’s completely in his element.” I smiled at them.
“Have fun! Oh, and work too!” Mrs. Geiger called as they walked out.
I sat back and listened to Teddy and the other man.
“So instead of this, you’re saying that we should put this?” He questioned, pointing to something on a paper. The man nodded. “Well let me ask Brooke, a third opinion.”
“Did I hear a certain someone say my name?” I asked walking over to give Ted a peck on the cheek. The man rolled his eyes.
“You most certainly did,” he tickled my chin.
“Can we get back to work Geiger. Honestly,” the man shook his head.
“Okay here is the problem.” He went on into detail about whether I like a certain chord progression better than the other, and I got completely lost. He laughed. “Never mind.” Teddy kept at it for a while longer, and I was getting hungry. I looked at my watch. Dinnertime. I turned on my cell phone. Fifteen missed calls. Ten unread voicemails. Mom. d**n.
I stepped out into the hall to call her.
“Hello?” Her stressed voice said on the other line.
“Hey, Mom,” I winced, preparing myself for the yelling.
“BROOKE ELIZABETH BENTLEY WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU!”
“Umm…New York?” I said in a tiny voice.
“What?! What are you doing there?!”
“Umm…helping a friend make an album?” Again with the tiny voice.
“Did that fool of a boyfriend you have yourself pressure you into this!” She yelled.
“Mother, you know d**n well that he is NOT a fool. And you also know he wouldn’t pressure me into anything. I know I’m not supposed to be here, but I needed a break! I haven’t been having problems or flashbacks or whatever the hell you want to call them for a while now. Because of Ted!” I lectured, more confident now.
“You WILL not speak to me that way, young lady. Do you hear me?”
“Yes, mom.”
“Now, are you coming home?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I told you why. Please mom. You know what I said was true.” I was really pushing my luck here.
There was a pause. Oh my goodness was she actually considering me staying?
“Fine. How long?” Whoa. I couldn’t believe it.
“Three or four days.”
“Fine. When you get back, you’re grounded for two months. No car, TV, music, phone, friends, or visiting any other rooms beside the bathroom and your room. Well maybe the kitchen too. Total lockdown. Two months. Goodbye.”
I hung up the phone in awe. A small price to pay for a completely unique experience. I turned around and walked back into the room, jaw still hanging open. Teddy raised an eyebrow from his position in the vocal booth, and I shrugged.
As if that hadn’t been enough excitement, Teddy’s parents and friends arrived at seven to pick us up and take us to dinner.
“Hey everyone!” Ted ran up to them and greeted. “Hey man!” He shook hands with a guy who looked about our age. He was tall, with hazel green eyes and very light brown hair. He was, although I felt guilty admitting it, extremely handsome.
“Who is this gorgeous girl?” He asked looking at me. I blushed.
“This,” Teddy wrapped his arm around me, “is my girlfriend Brooke.”
“It’s a pleasure,” he extended his hand to shake mine. “I’m Luke.”
“Hey, Luke,” I took his hand and shook it. It was warm despite the cold, and his touch sent my blood boiling. Teddy introduced me to the rest of Luke’s family. They all seemed kind and I liked them all. Especially Luke.
Everyone filed out of the studio, but Teddy held me back for a moment. He pulled me in and kissed me. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too,” I whispered softly. I looked over Ted’s shoulder and I could’ve sworn I caught a glimpse of Luke in the doorway for just a moment.
